Full Job Description

WHO WE ARE

The mission of Faith In Practice is to improve the physical, spiritual, and economic conditions of the poor in Guatemala through short-term surgical, medical, and dental mission trips and health-related educational programs. Our mission is based on an ecumenical understanding that as people of God we are called to demonstrate the love and compassion that is an outward sign of God's presence among us. Faith In Practice's life-changing medical mission is to minister to the poor, while providing a spiritually enriching experience for our volunteers.

JOB SUMMARY

The Controller is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and discipline of financial operations. In addition, the Controller serves as the global leader and backbone of financial operations for Faith In Practice. This role is responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and discipline of all financial operations across U.S. and Guatemala finance functions, while institutionalizing strong internal controls, reporting cadence, and cross-functional alignment. The Controller partners with executive leadership by providing accurate and timely financial data to support decision-making. The Controller will be involved in financial strategic planning, budgeting, and compliance. This position ensures disciplined execution of all accounting and reporting functions. Candidates must be able to travel to Guatemala as needed (≈10%).

Salary: $115,000–$130,000, commensurate with experience, plus performance-based bonus (5–10%).

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance and Accounting:

Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; monitor progress and changes and keep management informed of financial status.
Manage organizational cash flow forecasting for US and Guatemalan operations.
Provide financial information for granting organizations.
Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory requirements.
Oversee preparation of monthly financial statements and other departmental reports.
Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs/processes to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
Lead monthly close and reporting.
Direct and manage annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
Oversee all audit activities to include preparation of audit schedules, including extensive in-kind donation calculations, audit financial statements and footnote disclosures.
Oversee all US and Guatemala tax reporting including Form 990 tax return and related schedules for IRS filing, Forms 1099 & 1096 and Foreign Bank & Financial Accounts (FBAR).
Review the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
Own and execute a disciplined monthly close process with a target completion timeline of 10–15 business days.
Develop and implement standardized reconciliation formats and review procedures across U.S. and Guatemala operations.
Monitor accounts receivables and payables, ensure timely follow-up and resolution of outstanding items.
Partner with various departments to ensure accurate and timely reconciliation of donor systems to the general ledger.
Maintain clear visibility into short-term cash position and upcoming obligations.
Manage and evaluate all banking relationships in the US and Guatemala.
Oversee Asociación La Fe en Práctica related to financials and its independent audit
Prepare financial reporting for Board and Finance Committee review

Risk Management, Insurance, Legal and Regulatory and Internal Compliance:

Support leadership in evaluating financial implications of insurance programs.
Oversee legal, regulatory, and governmental compliance in US and Guatemala.

· Responsible for managing internal controls; ensuring the safeguarding of assets, ensuring financial statement reliability, promoting operational efficiency, and encouraging compliance with management's directives.

Payroll and Benefits:

· Provide oversight and reconciliation support for payroll and related financial reporting.

· Work with PEO to manage all Benefits and Payroll related matters

· Work closely with PEO to ensure accuracy is maintained in the Worksight 2.0 payroll system and the SaaShr timekeeping system

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Ten years of accounting and finance experience in, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to Board of Directors and Subcommittees. The candidate will ideally have high-level management experience in a complex nonprofit with an operating budget of $5+ million.

Other qualifications include:

· Minimum of a BA; MBA preferred and/or current CPA license

· Ability to travel to Antigua, Guatemala 10% annually

· Proficiency in written and verbal communication in Spanish highly preferred

· Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments

· Technology savvy and advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software

· Experience in managing international staff and external partner relationships

· Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.

· Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Faith in Practice’s financial status.
