Zeta Energy has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, exceptionally resourceful, and technically talented senior chemical engineer to work on a critical mission to develop and scale up sustainable, innovative, high-performing battery electrode materials and processes. As Zeta Energy transitions its game-changing technology from the laboratory to the factory floor, the senior chemical engineer will support the commercialization of patented, high-energy, high-power, and low-cost cathode and anode materials. The senior chemical engineer will develop, operate, and optimize chemical/material production processes, equipment, and processing facilities to produce consistent, high-purity, and high-throughput battery materials. This includes execution of projects from concept through process design, procurement, equipment building/assembly, integration of control and safety systems, operation, and continuous maintenance. The senior chemical engineer will possess a fine blend of conceptual, analytical, and hands-on skills in process & equipment design/analysis and equipment operation/maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Rigorously apply chemical engineering fundamentals to solve technical problems involving design and operation of chemical reactors and powder processing equipment for battery cathode and anode materials production
- Design and optimize chemical processes & equipment and operate/maintain reactors and processing equipment, e.g., tube reactor, fixed/packed bed reactor, fluidized bed reactor, chemical vapor deposition reactor, and/or powder mixing equipment
- Mathematical modeling and computational fluid dynamics of powder packing of reactive materials in fixed/packed bed reactors and powder flow in fluidized bed reactors, as well as model validation using experimental techniques
- Material production in chemical reactors and responsibility overseeing the process from start to finish
- Utilize available resources and subject matter experts, e.g., company scientists, equipment manufacturers/parts suppliers, or partners to leverage knowledge into process designs and solutions to technical problems
- Provide creative and conceptual process/equipment design input for chemical/material production
- Develop and implement process control/automation for reactors and processing equipment
- Develop and implement process engineering best practices and standard operating procedures
- Use a variety of characterization tools and instruments, such as microscopy, spectroscopy, diffraction, thermogravimetry, calorimetry, chromatography, residual gas analysis, pyrometry, etc., to diagnose and troubleshoot process challenges
The following are required from the candidate:
- BS in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physical science, or a related discipline with 3+ years of relevant industrial experience
- Demonstrated experience in the execution of chemical reactor processes for laboratory synthesis and/or industrial production from concept development through operation
- Competent in reactor process engineering, troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques, and understanding/compliance with engineering standards
- Expertise in mathematical modeling and computational fluid dynamics of powder packing of reactive materials in fixed bed reactors and powder flow in fluidized bed reactors, as well as model validation using experimental techniques
- Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability and practical experience in applying this understanding to solve complex and challenging technical problems
- Working knowledge and experience developing and analyzing process flow diagrams and piping & instrumentation diagrams, mass-energy balances for processes, chemical process simulation & modeling, and process economics
- Hands-on skills on process technology, vacuum pumps & processes, pressure relief design, chemical abatement/scrubbing, and process safety management
- Experience conducting process hazard reviews, risk assessments, and installation of engineering safety controls
- Mastery of engineering computational programs, data analysis & visualization, and/or programming skills. Experience with machine learning is desirable
- Knowledge of process control/automation and/or robotic process automation
- Ability to prepare professional, high quality project reports and technical reviews
- Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies as directed by the facility manager/ safety officer; ability to evacuate the facility in a timely manner should an emergency arise; and ability to wear and properly use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) if working or visiting within the laboratory area. PPE may include safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, hard hat, or other equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
- Ability to use half and full-face mask respirators for extended periods of time if required
- Ability to perform duties and responsibilities with a flexible work schedule
