About the Role
Echo Point Books & Media is a fast-growing independent audiobook publisher (remote-first) and physical book distribution operation. These business activities are very different, but they share a lot of people and IT resources. We’re looking for a talented and reliable systems administrator to add redundancy and support at a pivotal moment in the company’s growth.
Reporting to the CTO, this role straddles hardware and software/cloud-based admin responsibilities. You’ll be the third member of a small IT team: the CTO focusing on development, architecture, and planning; a colleague handling data analysis, internal tooling, and data acquisition for Echo Point's publishing business; and you owning infrastructure and operations.
This isn’t a seat-filler role, we’re building something special and growing fast!
What you’ll work with:
- Identity: On-premises Active Directory synchronized to Entra ID, hybrid-joined devices, Microsoft 365 across the org
- Servers: Windows Server 2025, Debian and Ubuntu Linux
- Virtualization: A Proxmox cluster running VMs and LXC containers, plus Docker via Portainer for internal services
- Networking: UniFi throughout — UDM Pro, managed switches, access points, VLAN segmentation, VPN
- Storage and data: Synology NAS, PostgreSQL
- Endpoints: Windows laptops and workstations, handheld scanners, Zebra printers, remote-issued hardware
- Internal tooling: BookStack for documentation, Grafana for dashboarding, operational reporting
What we’re looking for:
Technically:
- Strong Entra ID and Microsoft 365 administration — Conditional Access, MFA, licensing, Exchange Online, the security and compliance side
- Real experience managing endpoints you never physically touch: Intune or equivalent, policy-based configuration, zero-touch provisioning
- Several years administering Windows Server and Active Directory, with genuine hybrid identity experience
- Solid networking fundamentals: VLANs, routing, firewall rules, DNS, DHCP, VPN
- Working Linux server administration
- PowerShell scripting, and the instinct to automate rather than repeat
- Backup and recovery ownership, including having actually restored something under pressure
Nice to have:
Experience supporting a distributed workforce, warehouse or distribution environments, UniFi or similar network stacks, Proxmox or other virtualization, monitoring tooling, SQL literacy. Experience as an internal IT generalist at a small to medium sized company, or as an MSP technician ready to work one place and take ownership of projects.
Just as important:
- Communication is a technical requirement here, not a soft skill. We think computers are tools and the person operating them is the point. You can’t build the right system without understanding what people actually need, and you can’t learn that if they don’t want to talk to you. Half our users are on a warehouse floor and half you’ll only ever meet on video. Both need to feel fine asking you for help.
- You understand why the work matters. Infrastructure here exists so books ship and audiobooks publish. When five things are on fire, we need you to know which one actually costs us money.
- You can run with something. Give you “remote onboarding takes too long” and you communicate with the right people to ask questions and come back with a scope, an approach, and a timeline.
