We have an immediate opening in Fort Worth, TX for an Engineering Manager with a passion for the automotive industry. This is a working managerial position that combines individual Product Design & Development with management of Engineering projects along with supervision of the Product Engineers. The successful candidate will have managerial experience along with the ability to design and develop sheet metal and tubular products.
As Engineering Manager, you’ll manage the entire process, from conception to production. This role is fun but not for the faint of heart because we have high expectations with regard to accuracy and timeliness of your work. You’ll need great 3D CAD skills, of course, but you’ll need to be handy with a wrench as well. You’ll need to effectively interact with vendors and customers, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are important too.

This is a hands-on Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineer position familiar with the design and manufacture of steel, stainless steel and aluminum sheet & tubular products. Specific product lines may include: Truck/SUV exterior accessories, Tool boxes, and Public Safety vehicle accessories. The main focus at our Fort Worth facility is Public Safety vehicle accessories.
The Engineering Manager will manage the day-to-day operations of the Fort Worth Engineering Department while simultaneously working on specific product designs and production releases. This is a working managerial position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interview, hire, train, and manage Product Development Engineers.
- Help Engineers improve their designs and problem solve on a daily basis.
- Design, 3D model, document and release new products and product line extensions.
- Structure BOMs and write formal ECOs.
- Install prototype products on vehicles and document their fitment.
- Communicate technical specifications with vendors (both domestic and international).
- Conceptualize new product ideas and suggest pertinent ones to Executive Management.
- Support Customer Service by answering technical questions and designing special parts as necessary.
- Design and supervise the fabrication of special displays for trade shows.
- Lead bi-weekly Engineering meetings.
- Propose Cap-X improvements and implement equipment installation.
- Visit and scrutinize supplier facilities in order to determine their production qualifications.
- Occasionally travel to domestically to other Westin facilities and to assist with trade shows.
- Communicate with and support Sales Managers with technical issues.
- Communicate with the QA Manager as necessary in order to assist in quality problem solving.
- Troubleshoot and repair fabrication equipment as necessary.
- Participate in Managerial meetings including, but not limited to: Overstock, SEMA, Sales and Leadership.
- Review and update product application listings.
- Develop 2D production drawings as necessary.
- Explain product Features and Benefits to Marketing personnel.
- Review Marketing Copy and make corrections as necessary.
- Develop and review Installation Manuals.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will supervise the Product Development Engineers and provide them with Engineering direction as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from an accredited four year college or university in either Mechanical Engineering or Automotive Engineering. Additionally, work experience of at least 5 years as a Managerin the Automotive Industryis expected. This experience is also desired to be in the area of steel product fabrication involving steel plate, steel tube, fasteners, and the related coating processes. Additional experience in plastic component fabrication is valuable. Proficiency in SolidWorks is required. FEA experience is desired.
- Communication & Language Skills: Must be articulate and have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical documentation, professional journals, and government regulations. Must also be able to listen to any party voicing concerns in order to postulate the appropriate response, both to the concerned individual and to other company employees who then in turn need to take any appropriate actions. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in a calm professional manner and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply the concepts of basic statistics, geometry and trigonometry. Be able to postulate and accurately solve Mechanical Engineering equations.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Problem Solving: Be able to clearly understand and identify the priorities associated with product development and design. This requires the ability to understand the manufacturing process flow of the various products manufacturedby Westin. A non-adversarial approach is required that can interact with other departments to resolve issues with a team methodology. The ability to then effectively communicate the requirements associated with solving the problems to all effected parties is required. It requires an ability to also effectively and strongly be able to voice an experienced opinion without leading to undue confrontation. The individual must be able to take an assignment and determine how to achieve the results without need of constant supervision.
- Interpersonal Skills: A professional even tempered approach is desired in dealing with company managers, co-workers, vendors, or customers. This is a personable individual who knows their job and knows how to communicate by listening, considering all the alternatives, and who can then convey their position to help any issues to be resolved. The ability to multi-task a variety of efforts as assigned in an effective calm manner is essential. Must have the ability to see themselves as a member of a team working to perform their job function rather then an individual striving to stand out for individual accomplishment.
