Full Job Description

Position Summary:

At Benton Franklin Orthopedic Associates, we’re passionate about providing exceptional orthopedic care to our community — and we know that takes an outstanding team. We’re currently looking for a Surgical First Assistant to join us on a per diem basis, supporting our surgeons during procedures at Lourdes Medical Center or Trios Hospital on Mondays only.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to maintain their surgical skills in a focused, low-commitment schedule — perfect for work-life balance, supplemental income, or easing back into the OR environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Gather, inspect, and prepare surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.
Set up the sterile back table and mayo stand with all required instruments and materials.
Conduct initial and ongoing counts of instruments, sharps, and sponges with the circulating nurse.
Assist team members with gowning and gloving to maintain sterile technique.
Help drape the patient and establish the sterile field in preparation for surgery.
Participate in surgical site verification and patient identification during the time-out process.
Anticipate and prepare additional instruments and supplies as needed throughout the procedure.
Provide hands-on assistance to the surgeon during procedures, anticipating instrument and procedural needs.
Ensure the highest standards of sterile technique are maintained at all times.
Accurately perform all necessary counts throughout the procedure and prior to closure.

Education, Experience & Skills:

Degree in Surgical Assisting from an accredited program with successful completion of clinical training.
Certification through the NBSTSA with passing exam results.
Current Washington State Surgical Assistant License. CST certification is required.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not required.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Strong knowledge of medical and surgical terminology.
Ability to remain calm, focused, and efficient in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
Physical stamina and the ability to work long shifts, including the ability to move or lift patients as needed.

Additional Information:

This is a per diem position, scheduled for Mondays only.
Coverage may be required at either Lourdes Medical Center or Trios Hospital.
