CIVILIAN BAILIFF
KENOSHA COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT
Kenosha County is seeking applications for Civilian Bailiff positions that are needed at scheduled intervals at a Judge or Court Commissioner’s request in Circuit Court. This position provides courteous, responsive, trustworthy, and efficient service to the judges, commissioners, court staff, jurors, litigants, court visitors, and the general public who utilize the Kenosha County Circuit Court judicial system.
Circuit Court will provide training for this position, including training on Circuit Court procedures.
Work Schedule and Wage
- Bailiffs are assigned/scheduled at the discretion of the judges/commissioners
- The work schedule and needs will vary week by week based on the court calendar
- Morning sessions are generally 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM or as otherwise instructed by the judge or commissioner
- Afternoon sessions are 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM
- The wage is $40.00 per session; work performed after 5:00 PM is paid an additional $5.00 per hour
- This position is variable part time, as needed, and is not benefit eligible
Position Summary and Job Duties
- Carries out directives from the Judge, Court Commissioner, and Clerk of Court regarding duties to be performed during the course of the workday
- Acts as a liaison at appropriate times between jurors, commissioners, judges, court staff, deputies, and attorneys during hearings, trials, and jury deliberation
- Checks in litigants and attorneys and advises court staff
- Makes copies of court calendars and other documents and disseminates to appropriate parties
- Assists in the transfer of documents from court litigants and attorneys to the judge or commissioner
- Is sworn by the Court to supervise and escort the jury during trial proceedings, recesses, and deliberations, and ensures that no unauthorized persons come into contact with the jurors
- Ensures proper destruction of juror notes following the verdict being accepted by the court
- Assists with any juror needs, including ordering of lunches, juror personal issues if they arise, and other juror needs, and informs the judge of any unusual circumstance
- Provides basic courtroom monitoring including an attentiveness to court participants and individuals who are sitting in the courtroom audience for adherence to courtroom decorum and rules; reports any issues to the judge, clerk, or deputy
- Ensures jury room, courtroom, bathrooms, and lounges are kept clean and orderly; reports any issues to the clerk
- Provides for materials that are needed by the jury which could include pencils, paper, exhibits, and approved written documents
- Escorts jury members to restrooms, lunchrooms, or lounges
- Delivers documents from courtroom to appropriate Clerk of Court offices in a timely manner as directed by the judicial assistant
- Maintains confidentiality of all courtroom proceedings and discussions, on or off the record
- May assist in securing sequestered jurors in their hotel rooms and arranging for any special needs
- Performs other duties as required or assigned

Job Requirements, Education, Training and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be able to ambulate through hallways and courtroom and be able to sit for long periods of time
- Must successfully pass background investigation
- Must be able to work overtime as required
- Previous courtroom or law enforcement experience, preferred

Kenosha County participates in the FICA Alternative Retirement Program. Employees are automatically enrolled in this program if they do not meet eligibility criteria for the Wisconsin Retirement System (pension). The FICA Alternative plan replaces the payment of FICA tax and instead contributes a percentage of pre-tax wages into an investment account for the benefit of the employee.
