Full Job Description

Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain a fleet of excavation and earthmoving equipment. The ideal candidate will ensure equipment is safe, reliable, and operating at peak performance to support excavation, grading, underground utility, and site development projects. This position requires experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and preventative maintenance on heavy construction equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy excavation equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, skid steers, compact track loaders, backhoes, articulated dump trucks, rollers, and attachments.
Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks, and equipment inspections.
Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, powertrain components, and braking systems.
Diagnose equipment issues using computerized diagnostic software and manufacturer service manuals.
Repair or replace engines, hydraulic cylinders, pumps, hoses, motors, transmissions, differentials, and electrical components.
Perform welding and light fabrication repairs on buckets, blades, attachments, and equipment frames as needed.
Conduct field service repairs at construction job sites to minimize equipment downtime.
Inspect equipment daily for safety concerns and ensure all repairs meet manufacturer specifications and company safety standards.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair logs, inspection reports, and parts usage documentation.
Coordinate with project managers, equipment operators, and shop personnel to schedule repairs and preventative maintenance.
Maintain inventory of tools, parts, lubricants, and shop supplies.
Keep the shop and service vehicles clean, organized, and compliant with safety regulations.
Follow OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and environmental procedures for handling fuels, oils, and hazardous materials.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
Technical training in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field preferred.
Three or more years of experience repairing heavy construction or excavation equipment preferred.
Experience with hydraulic systems, diesel engines, electrical troubleshooting, and computerized diagnostics.
Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
Valid driver's license required; CDL is a plus.

Required Skills

Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to read hydraulic, electrical, and equipment schematics.
Knowledge of CAT, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, Case, Bobcat, or similar heavy equipment.
Ability to prioritize repairs in a fast-paced construction environment.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Basic computer skills for maintenance tracking and repair documentation.

Physical Requirements

Lift and carry up to 75 pounds with or without assistance.
Frequently stand, kneel, bend, crawl, climb, and work underneath heavy equipment.
Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to safely operate forklifts, cranes, service trucks, and heavy equipment when necessary.

Work Environment

Combination of shop and field service work on active excavation and construction job sites.
Exposure to dirt, mud, dust, noise, grease, diesel fuel, oils, and varying weather conditions.
Occasional overtime and weekend work may be required to support project schedules and emergency equipment repairs.

The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, and committed to minimizing equipment downtime to keep excavation projects on schedule.

Pay: $28.00 - $38.00 per hour
