General DSP Role Overview:
Take a lead to support a life of possibilities for individuals served by supporting them in leading and living their best life. Work collaboratively with the team to provide person-centered, productive, respectful, safe, meaningful and enriching experiences, in the community and at home. Services are based on each person’s interests, needs and abilities with an eye on building relationships and socially valued roles. Always supporting informed life decisions with regard to self-advocacy, health, safety, relationships and career choices. Serves as a role model to people supported, support staff and community members – always teaching by example. Maintaining a positive, productive team environment which includes relationships with people, families, management, other agency employees, community members and establishments.

Essential Responsibilities: (Not limited to the following)

Leadership:

1. Knows the mission, policies and procedures of Looking Upwards.

2. Values and demonstrates courtesy, cooperation, fairness, honesty and objectivity in all interactions and encourages the same style of interaction from all team members.

3. Provides on call coverage.

4. Conducts individual bi-annual supervision meetings with DSPs; highlights successes and strengths; sets and clearly defines expectations and performance improvement plans; contacts the Human Resources Dept. with any employee relations concerns; documents discipline according to agency policy

5. Understands and follows the Progressive Discipline approach to performance issues.

6. Responsible for compiling and completing all meetings and evaluations as outlined in the __________ Policy and submitting them to the HR Department.

7. Develops a written list which delegates duties equitably to all staff members working within the home.

8. Actively plans, organizes, and facilitates staff meetings; maintains agenda and minutes for each meeting.

9. Attends and/or facilitates required meetings as appropriate (ISP, Team, RTM, Leader’s, etc.)

10. Review and approve all time sheets and mileage sheets according to agency policy prior to submission to the office.

11. Assists with coordinating investigations

12. Attends agency and community events

Health, Safety & Well Being:

1. Ensures and monitors that all necessary supplies are in the home including food, cleaning supplies, personal needs items and funds; maintain house log book

2. Ensures up-keep, cleanliness and safety of the home and vehicle(s); reports concerns in a timely manner to the appropriate person.

3. Monitors all medical protocols within the home

a. Ensures that staff and self are trained, authorized and retrained to administer medications

b. Follow all medical protocols under the supervision of the RN

c. Provide timely follow-up regarding medication errors

4. Prepare and coordinate for emergencies: weather events, hospitalizations, medical appointments, etc.

5. Completes the Safety Inspection Checklist bi-annually

Licensing:

1. Ensures that the program(s) meet all Fire Safety Code requirement

2. Ensures the program(s) meet Licensing requirements in all areas, including:

a. Physical Environment

b. Nutrition

c. Safety

d. Emergency Management

e. Individual Human Rights

f. General Staffing Requirements

g. Management of Participants’ Funds/Fiduciary Duties

h. Abuse, Neglect, Mistreatment, and other Human Rights Violations

i. Policies and Training

Finance:

1. Responsible for accurate record keeping of individual’s earned income and petty cash accounts, ensuring availability of personal needs and clothing monies.

2. Completes Personal Needs monthly and submits to the Looking Upwards office.

3. Maintain house petty cash, submit as appropriate, ensuring availability of funds at all times.

4. Complete SNAP/EBT paperwork (initial application, 6 month update and recertification) when necessary in a timely fashion.

5. Responsible for maintaining a positive balance in all accounts at all times.

Staff Scheduling and Training:

1. Identifies open positions within the program in conjunction with the Residential Administrator and Human Resource Department

a. Conducts second interviews with applicants recommended by the HR Dept. in a timely manner

b. Includes people supported in the hiring process

c. Ensure completion of the orientation and house specific training for all employees

2. Ensures that staff are fully trained and provided with the supervision necessary to ensure the highest standard of quality for persons supported.

3. Maintains staff schedule within the approved hours for the program

4. Schedules and supervises all direct support professionals; secures relief staff as needed

5. Work scheduled on-shift hours as determined by Administration

6. Ability to fill-in/provide back up support within the staffing pattern as needed

Individual Support Planning/Quality Services:

1. Participate in the annual Pre-ISP and ISP meetings.

2. Assure the needs of the people supported are being met, by monitoring that supports are being provided as defined in the ISP

3. Ensure completion of all day program documentation in Solana and One Note. Train and Review the importance of data, notes, summaries, billing and supportive documentation for all staff completing day program shifts. Understand billing concepts and work with the billing assistant to ensure accurate completion.

4. Develops schedules with people supported that ensure their participation in the community and incorporates the support plan designed for the individual.

5. Facilitates and supports each person’s efforts to initiate and maintain family contact

Essential Qualifications and Requirements:

Be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED
Employees that are responsible for the transportation of individuals supported must have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. DSPs may be required to use their personal vehicle with proof of valid insurance, registration and inspection.
Ability to complete CPR, Safety Skills, Online Trainings and other required agency trainings
Employees that are responsible for the administration of medications to individuals supported must complete and carry out Medication Administration
Capable of effective oral and written communication
Capable of reading and comprehending policies and instruction, and use varying degrees of independent judgment and discretion
Ability to respond to emergency situations at all times

Essential Physical Demands: Must be able to operate tools and equipment safely (agency van, phone, copy machine, overhead projector, computer and email). Must be able to exert up to 100 lbs with two people and lift up to 50 lbs independently. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work as position frequently requires walking, driving, standing, sitting, reaching with hands/arms, kneeling, bending, twisting, stooping, pushing and pulling. Ability to carry out safety techniques and holds.
