A Little Bit About Us: Build Bookkeeping was founded by entrepreneurs and active real estate investors who saw a common problem: many small business owners were making important decisions without reliable financial information.

We created Build Bookkeeping to provide accurate, timely bookkeeping that gives business owners confidence in their numbers and clarity in their decisions. Today, we serve entrepreneurs and real estate investors with bookkeeping solutions built on accuracy, reliability, and long-term relationships.

Because we actively own and manage our own businesses and rental properties, we understand our clients' needs from the inside out.

Our Mission: We help entrepreneurs build stronger businesses by providing accurate, reliable, and timely bookkeeping that allows them to focus on growing what they've worked so hard to build.

Where and How You’d Work:

Build Bookkeeping is a virtual business based in La Crosse, Wisconsin, serving clients nationwide.

This is primarily a remote position with occasional in-person collaboration in the La Crosse area.

Unlike traditional accounting firms with rigid schedules and layers of management, you'll work directly with the owners. Your ideas matter, your work has a visible impact, and you'll have the flexibility of working from home while maintaining a consistent weekly schedule.

Details & Qualifications

Pay: $20–22 per hour (depending on experience)

Expected Hours: Approximately 15–20 hours per week

Preferred Qualifications

Previous bookkeeping or accounting experience.
Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, journal entries, and payroll entries.
Experience using QuickBooks Online.
Experience with real estate bookkeeping, including rental income, operating expenses, and fixed asset tracking, is preferred but not required.
Strong computer skills and attention to detail.

What You’d Do in This Role:

As our Bookkeeper, you'll help ensure our clients receive accurate financial information they can confidently use to run their businesses.

Responsibilities include:

Manage monthly bookkeeping for a portfolio of small business clients.
Enter and categorize financial transactions.
Reconcile bank and credit card accounts.
Prepare and review monthly financial reports for accuracy and completeness.
Record journal entries, payroll entries, and recurring monthly transactions.
Track expenses and maintain organized financial records.
Investigate discrepancies and resolve issues proactively.
Communicate with clients as needed regarding bookkeeping questions or missing information.
Assist with special projects such as onboarding new clients, historical cleanups, audits, and process improvements.

Monthly reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reports are completed accurately and on time.

This position is primarily remote. A reliable internet connection and a professional home workspace are required.
This role is ideal for someone who genuinely enjoys computer work, structured processes, and working with numbers. While each month presents new situations to solve, much of the work follows a consistent workflow—and that's exactly what makes great bookkeeping possible.
We care far more about accuracy than speed. We'd rather have someone who takes the time to get things right than someone who rushes through the work.
Build Bookkeeping is growing, and we're looking for someone who wants to grow with us. Over time, this position may expand into additional hours and responsibilities.
