Marina Forklift Operator

Position SummaryThe Boat Yard Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of forklifts, yard equipment, and other material-handling machinery to support daily marina operations. This position plays a critical role in the movement, storage, launching, and retrieval of vessels while ensuring exceptional care for customers’ boats, marina property, and equipment.The ideal candidate is safety-focused, mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced waterfront environment. This role requires strong communication skills, the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and a commitment to providing outstanding service to marina customers.
Essential Responsibilities: Vessel Handling & Equipment Operation
- Safely operate forklifts, marina tractors, yard carts, and other equipment used for vessel movement and storage.
- Assist with launching, hauling, blocking, and storage of boats according to marina procedures.
- Move boats, trailers, equipment, supplies, and materials throughout marina property.
- Properly position vessels on trailers, stands, racks, or storage locations.
- Assist with winterization, spring commissioning, and seasonal vessel movement activities.
- Perform pre-operation inspections of forklifts and equipment; report maintenance concerns immediately.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all marina safety procedures, OSHA guidelines, and equipment operating requirements.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings when operating heavy equipment near customers, employees, vessels, docks, and vehicles.
- Use proper lifting, rigging, blocking, and securing techniques.
- Ensure vessels are handled carefully to prevent damage.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Marina Operations Support
- Assist dock staff with daily marina activities as needed.
- Support maintenance teams with moving materials, tools, and equipment.
- Assist with dock repairs, property upkeep, and general marina projects.
- Help prepare the marina for special events, customer activities, and seasonal transitions.
- Provide friendly and professional assistance to boat owners and marina guests.
Customer Service
- Interact professionally with customers while handling their vessels.
- Communicate clearly regarding vessel movement, scheduling, and operational needs.
- Represent the marina with a positive attitude and commitment to exceptional service.
Required Qualifications
- Prior experience operating forklifts, tractors, travel lifts, or similar heavy equipment preferred.
- Ability to safely operate equipment in tight spaces and around boats, docks, and vehicles.
- Basic understanding of boats, trailers, and marina operations preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous marina, boatyard, shipyard, warehouse, construction, or equipment operation experience.
- Forklift certification or willingness to obtain certification.
- Experience handling powerboats, sailboats, and trailers.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Familiarity with waterfront safety practices.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and work around boats and docks for extended periods.
- Ability to operate machinery safely while maintaining situational awareness.
- Ability to work around water and on uneven surfaces.
- Ability to occasionally work weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak boating seasons.
