SUMMARY OR GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Senior System Administrator serves as the primary subject matter expert and operational leader for core infrastructure technologies, system architecture, and operational standards on a small, high performing team. This role is responsible for architecting solutions, making key technical decisions, providing expert support to team members, and leading end to end execution of IT infrastructure projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
Coordinate, develop, maintain, monitor, and secure all aspects of the enterprise server environment that support the systems and services delivered to the local community. This includes but is not limited to:
- Install, configure, secure, monitor, backup, and maintain physical and virtual servers across internal, external, cloud and shared assets.
- Monitor and secure configurations for internal, partner/vendor, and cloud solutions.
- Configure, monitor, and maintain security of servers, applications, and programs.
- Lead decision making and support configuration and management of virtual server and cloud computing solutions.
- Lead infrastructure initiatives to design, maintain and manage enterprise application solutions and protocols.
- Monitor, manage, and oversee selection of commercial off the shelf (COTS) software, applications, and programs.
- Collaborate with team to implement network configurations to support application integrations and services.
- Conduct advanced troubleshooting and serve as escalation point to respond and resolve issues reported from system alerts and notifications.
- Analyze, plan, coordinate, and implement system design changes and enhancements to improve and/or expand technical services. Includes maintaining awareness and continued learning on emerging trends and technologies (i.e. Artificial Intelligence)
- Establish and securely maintain a systems architecture suited for City services.
- Support periodic and focused network assessments related to security, performance, or capacity.
- Coordinate and develop project plans to effectively access cloud services to include Software as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service, public cloud services, private cloud services, and associated disaster or data recovery requirements.
- Monitor performance of data center and Cloud assets and perform troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose issues, identify solutions, and implement permanent fixes.
- Organize, plan, and take lead responsibility to improve and maintain server and associated hardware in the City data centers for on-site and hosted and Cloud environments.
- Prepare and plan for lifecycle replacement of servers and associated enterprise applications. Includes researching costs and collaborating with supervisor for budget planning.
- Manage, update, and maintain enterprise configuration management policies to include but not limited to directory services, printing services, enterprise storage, group policy, server/application backup and recovery, remote access, and virtual server environments.
- Develop relationships with local and regional technical, functional, and departmental leaders to set long-term security strategies, and to assess and act on short-term objectives and needs.
- Participate in discussions, prepare plans, and coordinate implementation of changes to address findings or recommended enhancements.
- Develop, document, and enforce technical standards, best practices, and security controls.
- Collaborate with peers, management, and vendors to provide comprehensive server capabilities to meet the demands for connectivity to static and mobile computing technologies.
- Provide leadership for a small team of system administrators, including technical guidance, and mentoring.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of the IT Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE: Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of physical, current virtual and cloud-based server and system administration, management, architecture, and security for enterprise-level networks. Considerable knowledge of current server and application security methodologies, architectures, and technologies to support compliance with regulations and standards for Microsoft server, VMware, and Linux-based architectures. Broad knowledge of emerging mobile friendly capabilities and solutions. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of PC hardware configuration and of PC and network operating systems.
SKILL: Apply the knowledge required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position; utilize effective interpersonal, oral, and written skills. Demonstrate professional level skills in planning, coordinating, implementing, and maintaining secure data center and server capabilities in collaboration with a small technical team.
ABILITY: Work as a team member and leader; develop trust and cooperation; develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers; act with tact, good judgment and discretion; maintain the confidentiality of matters, as appropriate; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; acquire knowledge of new trends and technology and apply modern practices. EVIDENCE OF QUALIFICATIONS:
TRAINING: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum seven (7) years of progressively increasing responsibility and successful application of experience in the maintenance, administration, management, and security of an enterprise server environment to include group policy, virtualization, integrations, and continuity of operations. Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and maintaining physical and virtual servers, appliances, data center management applications, cloud services, backup solutions, and a wide variety of business applications. Experience with maintaining current mainstream cloud applications and configuring application interfaces (APIs) for authentication, data transmissions and general application integrations. Must have certified training on VMware, Microsoft Server, Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Azure, and Microsoft Active Directory solutions, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the functions of the position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Colorado Driver’s License and maintenance of a safe driving record.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, manipulate, or feel objects, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, stoop, kneel, bend, crawl, climb ladders, climb on roofs and towers (over 30’) or crouch while performing the essential functions of the job. In addition, the incumbent must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock.
INDEPENDENCE OF ACTION:
Work is performed within authorized limits prescribed by the supervisor and/or policy. Exercises significant independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information, handling deviations from standard methods and resolving problems. Finished work is verified for attainment of objectives and adherence to deadlines. Supervisor is lightly available to assist in solving problems. Most work will require working with other departments and vendors.
