Driver/Collector
Position Level: Non-exempt
Reports to: Sanitation Foreman
Position Summary
The Driver/Collector operates refuse and recycling vehicles to collect garbage, recycling, bulk items, and yard waste from curbsides and alleys throughout the city. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy community and provides guidance to residents on proper waste and recycling practices. The Driver/Collector may also assist with other Street Department duties as assigned by the Street Commissioner.
Essential Job Functions (include but are not limited to)
- Collects trash, brush, recyclables, and bulk items on scheduled route.
- Drives collection vehicles and rides on exterior steps or platforms of the vehicle during active route collection, as required.
- Operates refuse and recycling vehicles safely and efficiently; performs pre- and post-trip inspections, fuels vehicles, completes required inspection reports, and assists with routine cleaning and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Participates in emergency response activities, including being on call outside of normal work hours, as required.
- Performs physically demanding work, including frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, and prolonged standing and walking in varying weather conditions.
- Works safely near traffic, pedestrians, and other hazards while following all safety protocols and procedures.
- Interacts courteously and professionally with residents to address basic questions or concerns related to waste and recycling services. Demonstrates professionalism when representing the organization in all communications with internal and external customers and vendors.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work environment in accordance with safety and appearance standards.
- Participates in required training and demonstrates the ability to apply learned concepts to daily work activities.
- Performs assigned duties in accordance with city policies, procedures, safety standards, and performance expectations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education/Skills/Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience operating trucks, heavy equipment, and power tools commonly used in municipal public works or sanitation operations.
- Ability to position and operate vehicles safely on collection routes while minimizing hazards to coworkers, the public, and traffic flow.
- Working knowledge of hazardous materials and proper handling and disposal procedures, or the ability to obtain such knowledge through training.
- Ability to interact professionally and courteously with residents, coworkers, and supervisors, including responding to basic questions or concerns from the public.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to listen, follow instructions, and work cooperatively as part of a team.
- Ability to organize work, manage time effectively, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to learn, retain, and apply job-related tasks, procedures, and training.
Work Schedule
This position is based on a standard workweek, Monday - Friday. Location hours are 7:00AM – 3:30PM. Occasionally this position is required to attend meetings, conferences, and work sessions outside of normal business hours. These instances may include client meetings, public board meetings, or team collaborations that fall outside the typical schedule. Flexibility in these situations is necessary as it contributes to our commitment to our customer’s satisfaction and project success. Regular, predictable attendance is required.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily outdoors in a variety of weather conditions (e.g., extreme heat or cold, rain, and snow).
- Work is performed in and around moving traffic and motorized equipment.
- Will be exposed to potentially hazardous materials and chemicals.
- Work is performed at a consistent pace.
- Ability to work in a team environment and communicate in a professional manner.
- Required to go to customer site where the environmental conditions will vary.
- Sustains housekeeping standards in accordance with appearance guidelines.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
- Possess the ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Climb in and out of the vehicle multiple times each day.
- Stand or sit for extended periods of time.
- Reach, stoop, and kneel to work with vehicles and equipment.
- Communicate both in person, electronically, and by telephone as needed
- Possess good hearing and vision to recognize hazards of the surrounding areas.

Certificates/Licenses
- Must be able to pass all applicable background checks.
- Valid Class B CDL with Air Brake Endorsement, along with a safe driving record, is required. (Subject to random drug testing in compliance with the Department of Labor).
