About Petco:
We’re proud to be "where the pets go" to find everything they need to live their best lives for more than 60 years — from their favorite meals and toys, to trusted supplies and expert support from people who get it, because we live it. We believe in the universal truths of pet parenthood — the boundless boops, missing slippers, late night zoomies and everything in between. And we’re here for it. Every tail wag, every vet visit, every step of the way. We are 29,000+ strong and together we nurture the pet-human bond in more than 1,500 Petco stores across the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico, 250+ Vetco Total Care hospitals, hundreds of preventive care clinics and eight distribution centers. In 1999, we founded Petco Love. Together, we support thousands of local animal welfare groups nationwide and have helped find homes for approximately 7 million animals through in-store adoption events.
Department & Team Overview
The Business Intelligence & Data Science department is responsible for leveraging strategic insights, customer analytics, data science, and market intelligence to understand customer behavior trends, product relationships, competitive positioning, and marketing opportunities to maximize financial performance and deliver exceptional customer experiences across our retail network. This role resides within the Business Intelligence team. This team translates complex retail data into clear, actionable reporting, dashboards, and strategic insights. We empower business leaders to make timely, data-backed decisions with confidence by providing both self-service analytical tools and tailored business consultation.
About the Role
Are you a strategic thinker who speaks both "business" and "data" fluently—and enjoys digging into the numbers to deliver immediate insights? We are seeking a dynamic, analytical, and highly communicative Senior BI Business Partner to act as the primary strategic interface between our central technical engineering groups and our retail business leaders.
In this customer-facing, hybrid role, you will bridge the gap between business strategy and data execution. You will not only uncover operational needs and translate them into technical specifications, but also conduct hands-on ad-hoc analysis and build self-service dashboard prototypes to give business partners immediate visibility. For complex reporting frameworks, enterprise data models, and scalable front-end builds, you will partner closely with our dedicated Front-End Development and Data Engineering teams to deliver polished, enterprise-grade solutions.
The ideal candidate is a relationship-builder, consultative problem-solver, and skilled analyst who can "talk the talk" with senior executives, craft practical analytical solutions on the fly, and collaborate effectively with technical developers.
Key Responsibilities
1. Business Strategy & Requirements Translation
- Strategic Liaison: Act as the dedicated partner for specific retail business units, building deep relationships with operational leaders to understand their strategic goals, KPIs, and operational pain points.
- Requirements Translation & Wireframing: Uncover underlying business needs, translating vague operational requests into actionable business requirements, metric definitions, user stories, and interactive dashboard wireframes.
- Prioritization & Roadmap Alignment: Partner with business leaders to evaluate the commercial impact of analytics requests, helping prioritize the BI development queue and shaping a value-focused roadmap.
2. Hands-On Analytics & Value Realization
- Ad-Hoc Analysis & Data Exploration: Perform hands-on ad-hoc quantitative analysis to answer urgent, time-sensitive business questions.
- Prototyping & Basic SSBI Dashboard Development: Design and build light-to-medium Self-Service BI (SSBI) dashboards and interactive reports (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or Looker) for immediate operational use and prototype validation.
- Complex Development Handoff: Package validated prototypes, data logic, and functional requirements to hand off complex, enterprise-scale front-end dashboard development and data modeling to central BI Developers and Engineers.
- Data Storytelling & Strategic Advice: Utilize quantitative reasoning to help business leaders interpret reporting outputs, articulate the "so what?" behind the numbers, and translate analytical insights into commercial action.
- Value Assurance & QA: Review developed BI solutions through a commercial lens prior to rollout to ensure accuracy, operational relevance, and alignment with business objectives.
3. Change Management & Stakeholder Enablement
- Executive & Cross-Functional Communication: Serve as the lead communicator for BI initiatives, presenting project milestones, analytical findings, and performance trends to leadership in plain business language.
- User Adoption & Self-Service Enablement: Champion data literacy across the retail organization, leading onboarding sessions, training workshops, and self-service office hours to maximize dashboard adoption.
- Expectation & Scope Management: Effectively manage delivery timelines and feature scope with business partners, balancing quick-win analytical requests with structured, long-term engineering releases.
Experience & Education
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Business Analytics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in a Business Intelligence Partner, Commercial Analytics, Strategic Business Analyst, or Analytics Consulting role within a fast-paced environment.
- Industry Experience: Strong domain expertise in retail operations, merchandising, e-commerce, or omnichannel commercial strategy is highly preferred.
Technical & Analytical Skills
- Hands-On Analytics & Excel Proficiency: Advanced expertise in Excel or Google Sheets for quick ad-hoc analysis and problem-solving.
- SSBI & Dashboard Development: Hands-on proficiency in building reports and basic-to-intermediate dashboards using modern BI platforms (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or MicroStrategy).
- Data Querying (SQL) (Preferred): Familiarity or experience with SQL for querying data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery) is beneficial but not strictly required.
- Agile Scoping & Wireframing: Proficiency in translating business needs into functional specifications, metric definitions, workflow diagrams, and conceptual dashboard wireframes.
- Data Architecture Literacy: Conceptual understanding of data modeling, ETL pipelines, and warehouse structures to collaborate effectively with data engineers and front-end developers.
Soft Skills & Competencies
- Consultative & Advisory Mindset: Exceptional active listening and consultative problem-solving skills; ability to ask probing questions that get to the core of business challenges.
- Executive Communication & Influence: Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build trust, present to executive stakeholders, and influence business decisions.
- Retail Acumen & Curiosity: Deep curiosity about retail business drivers, financial drivers (P&L impact), store/e-commerce operations, and customer behavior.
