Position Summary

The Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program is responsible for assisting the Program Director with the leadership, organization, operation, and general administration of the Internal Medicine Residency Program sponsored by Lakeland Regional Health (LRH). The Associate Program Director contributes to the strategic direction of the program and is responsible for the standards, quality and reputation of the program. The Associate Program Director is expected to assist with the integration of the Internal Medicine Residency Program with physician practices and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality and promotes an optimal environment for professional practice and medical education and drives efforts to advance residency education through accreditation.

- Standard Work: Associate Program Director - Internal Medicine Residency
- Assists with the organization and direction of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at LRH, including the organization of rotations and other educational activities at all clinical sites that participate in the program. This includes ensuring the quality of didactic and clinical education in all sites that participate in the program.
- Dedicate no less than 20% (at least 8 hours per week) of total professional effort to the administrative and educational activities of the Internal Medicine educational program. Be available and accessible to residents at the primary teaching site(s). Participate in the development of an effective resident advising program. Assist with the supervision any Internal Medicine subspecialty training programs sponsored by the institution and linked to the core program to ensure compliance with the ACGME accreditation standards. Ensures that the program does not place excessive reliance on residents for service as opposed to education. Maintain active clinical practice in Internal Medicine. Assists with recruitment and selection of candidates for the residency program through the National Residency Matching Program.
- Provides accurate statistical and narrative information in accordance with the requirements of the ACGME and the ACGME’s Review Committee for Internal Medicine as requested by the Program Director. This includes but is not limited to the program application forms and annual program resident updates to the ADS, and ensuring that the information submitted is accurate and complete. Submit reports on program, faculty, and fellow performance to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) as requested by the Chair of the GMEC and Program Director.
- Ensures the implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements, including but not limited to policies for resident duty hours and the working environment, moonlighting, grievance procedures, and due process, as established by the GMEC, and in compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements. Maintain current knowledge of the accreditation and operational requirements of the residency program, including monitoring current trends and anticipating changes. Maintain working knowledge of GME finance and reimbursement as it pertains to the Internal Medicine residency program and associated fellowship programs. Attend educational programs sponsored by faculty members in Internal Medicine and other educational activities intended to maintain and improve the quality of the program. In conjunction with the Program Director, obtains approval and written signature of the DIO for: a. All applications for ACGME accreditation of new programs b. The addition or deletion of a participating institution c. A change in the structure, length, or format of the educational program d. A change in the approved resident complement e. Progress reports requested by the Review Committee f. Responses to all proposed adverse actions g. Requests for increase or any change to resident duty hours h. Voluntary withdrawals of ACGME accredited programs i. Requests for appeal of an adverse action j. Appeal presentations to a Board of Appeal or the ACGME k. Proposals to ACGME for approval of innovative educational approaches.
- Assists the Program Director in the preparation and approval of innovative educational approaches. Assists with the selection of qualified Internal Medicine physicians and other specialists to serve on the program faculty. Assists with organization of the faculty to deliver a consistently high-quality education program. Assists with the evaluation of the performance of faculty in meeting program objectives, including resident satisfaction with the program.
- Develops and implement programs to enhance the knowledge, clinical expertise, and teaching skills of the faculty. Assures that faculty meet research and scholarly activity requirements of the program, including active participation in the clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship.
- Assists with the preparation and implementation of the Internal Medicine Residency curriculum to provide a high-quality educational program and meet the requirements of the ACGME and the ABPN. Assists with the establishment of the clinical assignments and schedules of the residents to achieve the educational objectives of the program. Resident schedules and assignments for each resident in the program are expected to be established no later than June 1 for the upcoming academic year beginning July 1.
- Collaborates with the faculty to evaluate resident performance in relation to the educational objectives of the program and the ACGME’s milestones for Internal Medicine. The Associate Program Director shall participate in the Clinical Competency Committee in accordance with ACGME requirements and shall maintain appropriate documentation of the evaluation process in accordance with ACGME requirements. Facilitate decision making, with faculty input, to promote residents to the next level of training in the program and decisions to graduate residents upon completion of the program. Additionally, the Associate Program Director is responsible for providing verification of residency education for all residents, including those who leave the program prior to completion.
- Ensures that residents are assigned clinical responsibilities appropriate for their level of training and level of knowledge and skill, are properly supervised in clinical assignments, and provide safe and effective patient care. The Associate Program Director shall assist with the development and maintenance of written supervision standards, requirements, and procedures in accordance with current ACGME requirements. Participates in the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and other hospital committees as requested by the DIO and the Program Director.

Experience Essential:

Board Certified or Board Eligible with completion of certification as delineated within Lakeland Regional Health Medical Staff Office Bylaws.
Have at least 3 years' experience as a core faculty member in an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency program.
Have unrestricted credentials within the Department of Internal Medicine of Lakeland Regional Medical Center and be licensed to practice medicine by the State of Florida.
Possess the required specialty expertise, as well as documented educational and administrative abilities, to carry out the responsibilities of the role and to achieve the goals and objectives of the program.
Appointed and in good standing to the LRH medical staff. Be appointed in good standing to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Be clinically active in Internal Medicine.

Certifications Essential:

Be certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine or hold credentials deemed equivalent to Certification by the ACGME’s Internal Medicine Residency Review Committee.

Licenses Preferred:

Current Florida License to practice Medicine in the State of Florida.
