Full Job Description

Job Objective: Under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist and the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor performs routine and basic pharmacy procedures for the operation of an acute care pharmacy to assist the Pharmacists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assists Pharmacist in proper labeling of medications, processes medications orders and those returned to Pharmacy

2. Assists Pharmacist in preparing labels.

3. Assures adequate inventory is maintained at all times.

4. Assures and credit and billing tasks are completed in a timely and thorough manner

5. Maintains professional work habits by organizing workload, setting priorities, completing assignments in a timely manner, utilizing resources appropriately, complying with department program standards and adapting well to change

6. Performs basic pharmacy procedures such as checking in merchandise, filling physician's orders for pharmacy verification, floor stock, preparing IV's and TPN's.

7. Recognizes departures from the normal and discusses with pharmacist

Competence:

1. Maintains an appropriate level of competence by ongoing development of knowledge and skills

2. Performs duties in accordance with relevant laws, regulations and technical standards

3. Participates in age specific educational and training programs

Confidentiality:

1. Refrains from disclosing confidential information acquired in the course of work except when authorized, unless legally obligated to do so

2. Refrains from using or appearing to use confidential information acquired in the course of work for unethical or illegal advantage either personally or through third parties

Integrity:

1. Regularly demonstrates commitment to a set of ethics and values by behaving in an ethical manner that is consistent with stated values. Supports and enforces hospital Corporate Compliance Program

2. Avoids actual or apparent conflicts of interest and advises all appropriate parties of any potential conflict

3. Refrains from engaging in any activity that would prejudice the ability to carry out duties ethically

4. Disclose fully all relevant information that could reasonably be expected to influence an intended user understanding of the reports, comments, and recommendations presented

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge

Understands and can apply all state and federal laws and regulations related to the practice of pharmacy. Pharmacy Law, MERP, Joint Commission.

Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency regarding special needs and behaviors of age or ethnic specific groups

Skills

Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate the ability to collaborate with other health care professionals

Abilities

Ability to adhere with AVMC Policies and Procedures and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of corporate compliance rules and regulations

Ability to adhere to safety rules and regulations and maintain the confidentiality of patient, hospital, and department information

Coordinate with other team members and assists manager with implementation of new applications.

Education and Experience:

Education

High School diploma.

Associate of Arts or bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience

Prior experience in acute care hospital OR a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a pharmacy preferred.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

Current State of California Pharmacy Technician License

CPhT preferred

Ability to participate effectively in department and hospital staff education.

Ability to give and support the highest level of patient/customer satisfaction at all times.

Supports and adheres to the values and mission statement established by the AVMC Board of Directors.

Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the Compliance & Integrity Program and its established policies.

Ability to follow the Code of Conduct.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Works primarily in an office environment.

Requires ability to stand, sit or walk around department and facility most of the day.

Some bending, lifting less than 20 lbs. and occasionally reaching above the shoulder.

Typing, answering phones and working around automated equipment.

Potential for exposure to dangerous or toxic medications.

May need PPE if preparing chemotherapy.
