Overview / Summary

Our local news websites dedicated to delivering timely and trustworthy coverage of Lancaster County are seeking a Managing Editor to lead editorial operations. This role is responsible for overseeing daily news coverage, managing staff and freelance reporters, and ensuring journalistic standards are consistently met. The Managing Editor will play a key role in shaping editorial priorities while fostering an environment that values accuracy, fairness, and community impact.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee daily editorial operations, including content planning, assignments, and publication schedules.
Edit and review articles for clarity, accuracy, grammar, and adherence to editorial standards.
Monitor local news developments to identify, cover, or assign relevant stories.
Collaborate with leadership to establish editorial strategy and long-term coverage priorities.
Ensure compliance with legal and ethical journalism practices.
Maintain consistency in tone, style, and quality across all published content.
Represent the publications within the community and build relationships with local stakeholders when appropriate.

Qualifications — Required

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Minimum of three years of newsroom experience, with at least two years in an editorial leadership or management role preferred.
Strong editing, writing, and organizational skills.
Proven ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
Must reside in or near Lancaster County and possess strong familiarity with the region.
Must have reliable transportation.
Familiarity with digital publishing tools, content management systems, analytics platforms, and major social media platforms.
Proficiency with AI tools for research, editing, or workflow support, combined with sound judgment regarding their appropriate use in a newsroom setting.

Qualifications — Preferred

Direct experience working for a local or regional news organization.
Knowledge of or personal ties to Lancaster County and its communities.
Comfort working with multimedia content, including audio, video, and social media.

Work Environment / Conditions

This is a hybrid/remote position that requires on-location reporting and community engagement as needed. Scheduling is flexible and aligned with newsroom priorities.

Candidates residing in Lancaster County or with strong ties to the region are strongly preferred, as local knowledge is essential to producing informed and relevant coverage.

Occasional in-person meetings, breaking-news assignments, and attendance at local events may be required.
