About the Role
This newly created Content & Marketing Manager position develops, executes, and manages editorial and marketing initiatives that support the organization's mission, Strategic Plan, and communications priorities. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this position translates organizational strategy into effective communications that engage members, promote programs and services, strengthen organizational awareness, and enhance the member experience.
In this role, you will ensure communications are accurate, timely, engaging, and aligned with established organizational messaging and brand standards. You will work collaboratively with the Brand Manager and Project Coordinator to deliver integrated communications and marketing campaigns across multiple platforms. This position supervises the Managing Editor of the Michigan Bar Journal, a Communications Specialist, eJournal editors, and freelancers.
What You’ll Do
Develop & Implement Campaigns: Lead communications and marketing initiatives that support organizational priorities established by the Director of Communications. Translate strategic objectives into integrated campaigns that effectively promote State Bar programs, publications, services, events, and initiatives.
Oversee & Create Content: Oversee the development, editing, and publication of written communications across the organization's channels, including news items, eblasts, social media, eJournal, and the website. Author and edit communications to ensure consistency, quality, clarity, and audience alignment.
Optimize & Repurpose: Identify opportunities to improve communications effectiveness, audience engagement, and member awareness through thoughtful planning. Ensure communications are strategically repurposed across appropriate platforms to maximize reach.
Supervise & Mentor Teams: Supervise the Managing Editor of the Michigan Bar Journal, eJournal Editors, Communications Specialist, and freelancers. Provide direction, coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback while assigning work and establishing priorities.
Manage Workflows & Metrics: Utilize project management systems and workflows to ensure projects move efficiently from concept through publication on schedule. Monitor communications metrics and recommend data-driven improvements to strategies and marketing initiatives.
Cultivate Team Culture: Foster a collaborative, supportive, and creative work environment that encourages innovation, accountability, and professional growth.
What You Bring
Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, English, Public Relations, or a related field.
Professional Experience: At least seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in communications, marketing, publishing, journalism, or a related field.
Leadership Experience: Demonstrated experience supervising communications professionals or managing editorial teams.
Communication Skills: Exceptional writing and editing skills with a demonstrated ability to adapt messaging for diverse audiences and communication channels.
Project Management: Exceptional organizational, leadership, and project management skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple priorities simultaneously, develop communications plans, and manage editorial workflows.
Preferred Attributes
Legal Sector Familiarity: An understanding of Michigan's legal community and the mission of the State Bar of Michigan.
Organizational Experience: Experience working within an association, nonprofit organization, governmental entity, legal organization, or similarly complex membership-based organization.
Modern Tools: Experience working with project management systems such as Asana or comparable platforms.
Regulatory Awareness: An understanding of legal and ethical considerations affecting mandatory bar associations, including Keller and Administrative Order 2004-01.
