$33,823.14 - $63,789.96METER READER DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK The main responsibility in this work is the accurate reading and recording of water consumption of utility customers. Work includes keeping records according to established forms so that billing can be made properly. Ordinarily, employees follow designated routes, receiving specific work instructions and referring unusual questions to a superior for decisions. Nature of work involves extensive walking and the use of hand tools in clearing mud and other matter from meters and the use of handheld electronic meter reading equipment. ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Meter Reader. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor. • Reads water meters on an assigned route and records readings; makes special readings as required. • Checks to see that meters are functioning properly and reports any defects to a superior; clears mud, debris and other matter from meter cases. • Checks to determine consistency of meter readings and reports unusual cases to a supervisor. • Prepares diagrams showing locations of meters in relations to newly built houses. • Connects and disconnects service. • Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES • Working knowledge of the geography and locations of streets within the City. • Ability to write legibly, ability to make simple arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately. • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the general public. • Good health and good physical condition to permit walking all day under varying climatic conditions. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE • All applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Resident of the United States. • A high school diploma or G.E.D. from a recognized agency. • One (1) year of experience in field work with a public utility is preferred. • Ability to read, record and make simple arithmetic calculations. • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.
