Lead a multi-department retail, range, membership, and training operation
LOCATION

POSITION
Full-time
On-site
COMPENSATION
$60,000 - $85,000 (base + performance incentives) DOE
This is a true General Manager position—not a first-time management role.
We are seeking an experienced retail operator who has already owned a location P&L, led managers and front-line employees, hired and developed teams, and delivered measurable sales, margin, inventory, and customer-service results.
About Midwest Shooting Center
Midwest Shooting Center in Billings combines specialty retail, an indoor shooting range, membership sales, and firearms training in one customer-focused operation. We are building a professional, safety-driven business known for hospitality, knowledgeable service, and a modern approach to the shooting-sports experience.
The Opportunity
The Retail General Manager has full responsibility for the performance of the Billings location. You will lead department managers and front-line employees across retail, guest services, range operations, memberships, and training. You will own the location’s operating rhythm, people systems, financial performance, merchandising standards, customer experience, and compliance culture.
The strongest candidate will bring substantial hands-on retail leadership experience. Firearms-industry experience is helpful, but it is not required. High-performing leaders from sporting goods, outdoor recreation, hardware or home improvement, automotive retail, fitness, specialty retail, or another service-intensive retail environment are encouraged to apply.
What You Will Own
· P&L and business performance. Own revenue, gross margin, labor, controllable expenses, profitability, and performance against budget. Translate results into clear weekly priorities and corrective action.
· Retail execution and merchandising. Drive sales-floor standards, product presentation, pricing accuracy, promotional execution, inventory turns, replenishment, cycle counts, shrink control, and loss prevention.
· People leadership. Hire, onboard, train, coach, evaluate, and retain managers and employees. Set measurable expectations, conduct regular one-on-ones, address performance issues promptly, and build a leadership pipeline.
· Sales and customer growth. Increase retail sales, membership conversion, training participation, repeat business, referrals, and customer retention through disciplined sales management and exceptional service.
· Operating discipline. Establish schedules, staffing plans, opening and closing standards, cash controls, maintenance routines, and consistent execution across all departments.
· Safety and compliance. Maintain a culture of strict safety, accurate recordkeeping, and compliance with ATF requirements, OSHA standards, company policies, financial controls, and all other applicable rules.
· KPI management. Review and act on sales, margin, labor, inventory, conversion, membership, training, customer-service, and retention metrics. Report results clearly and hold the team accountable for improvement.
· Customer and employee escalations. Resolve complex issues professionally, protect long-term relationships, and reinforce consistent standards without avoiding difficult conversations.
Required Experience
· At least 5 years of progressively responsible retail management experience.
· At least 2 years as a General Manager, Store Manager, District Manager, Multi-Unit Manager, Retail Operations Manager, or comparable location leader with meaningful responsibility for the entire business.
· Direct ownership of a store or location P&L, including sales, gross margin, labor, expenses, and profitability.
· Demonstrated success hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, evaluating, and—when necessary—disciplining or terminating employees.
· Hands-on experience with retail merchandising, inventory management, pricing, shrink or loss prevention, and sales-floor execution.
· Experience managing managers or multiple departments—not only individual contributors or a single shift.
· Strong command of KPIs, budgets, schedules, labor planning, and performance reporting.
· A record of improving measurable business results such as sales, margin, customer satisfaction, retention, labor efficiency, or inventory accuracy.
· Ability to work on-site in Billings and maintain a visible leadership presence during the business’s highest-volume operating periods.
Preferred Experience
· High-volume specialty retail, sporting goods, outdoor recreation, hardware, automotive, fitness, or another regulated or service-intensive retail environment.
· Membership, subscription, service, training, or recurring-revenue business models.
· Firearms retail, shooting-range operations, training programs, or ATF/FFL compliance.
· POS, inventory-management, workforce-scheduling, and business-reporting systems.
· Leading through growth, operational turnaround, culture change, or process standardization.
What Success Looks Like
· The location consistently meets or exceeds revenue, margin, profitability, membership, training, and retention goals.
· Retail presentation, inventory accuracy, staffing, scheduling, and daily operating standards are consistent and inspection-ready.
· Managers know their numbers, own their departments, develop their employees, and follow through without constant escalation.
· Employees receive structured onboarding, ongoing training, clear feedback, and meaningful accountability.
· Customers experience knowledgeable, professional, and welcoming service across every department.
· Safety, compliance, cash controls, and recordkeeping are treated as non-negotiable operating disciplines.
How You Lead
· You are visible on the floor and close enough to the operation to recognize problems before they become crises.
· You set clear standards, inspect what you expect, and follow through consistently.
· You coach people directly and respectfully, but you do not avoid accountability or difficult decisions.
· You use data to diagnose performance while still understanding the customer and employee experience behind the numbers.
· You build repeatable systems rather than relying on heroics, personality, or constant owner intervention.
Your First 60 Days
· Learn the business model, customer base, products, range operations, training programs, and compliance requirements.
· Assess leadership capability, staffing, onboarding, scheduling, merchandising, inventory, customer service, and daily controls.
· Establish a practical scorecard and meeting cadence for managers and departments.
· Identify the highest-impact opportunities for sales growth, margin improvement, employee development, and operational consistency.
· Present and begin executing a prioritized improvement plan with clear owners, deadlines, and measurable outcomes.
Compensation and Benefits
· $60,000 - $85,000 (base + performance incentives), depending on directly relevant experience and demonstrated operating scope.
· Performance-based incentive compensation tied to agreed financial, operational, people, and customer metrics.
· Employee discounts on products.
· Free membership.
· Free training.
· Career growth opportunities within a growing company.
· Employee development programs.
