Position summary
The Senior Aluminum CNC Fabricator is a highly skilled fabrication professional responsible for performing advanced architectural aluminum extrusion fabrication while serving as the primary operator, programmer, and technical expert for the RhinoFab automated fabrication system. This role ensures accurate machine programming, maximizes production efficiency, minimizes material waste, and maintains the highest standards of quality and safety.
This position serves as a technical resource within the fabrication shop and supports production through skilled workmanship, troubleshooting, automation expertise, and continuous process improvement. While the role does not carry direct supervisory responsibility, it may provide technical guidance, coaching, and training to other fabrication personnel.
What you’ll do
Advanced aluminum fabrication
- Perform advanced fabrication of architectural aluminum extrusions and lineal materials, including cutting, drilling, routing, notching, machining, hardware preparation, assembly preparation, and part labeling.
- Read and interpret shop drawings, architectural drawings and elevations, fabrication specifications, CAD drawings, work orders, production schedules, cut sheets, optimization reports, and layouts.
- Verify dimensions, tolerances, hole locations, and fabrication requirements before production begins.
- Ensure all fabricated components meet customer specifications and Lake Glass quality standards.
- Troubleshoot fabrication challenges and identify practical solutions.
- Maintain high standards of precision, craftsmanship, and productivity.
RhinoFab
- Serve as the primary operator and subject matter expert for the RhinoFab automated fabrication system.
- Program, configure, and optimize RhinoFab production jobs based on project specifications, fabrication drawings, and production requirements.
- Import and review fabrication files from design and optimization software to verify dimensions, hole locations, cutouts, notches, cut lengths, and processing requirements prior to production.
- Coordinate with Estimating, Project Management, Engineering, and Shop Management to ensure production files are accurate and fabrication ready.
- Optimize machine programming and job sequencing to maximize throughput and minimize material waste.
- Monitor machine performance and production output to ensure quality, efficiency, and schedule adherence.
- Troubleshoot programming issues, machine faults, operational errors, and fabrication variances.
- Perform machine setup verification, calibration checks, tooling inspections, and operational testing.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance and communicate equipment service needs to management and vendors.
- Maintain RhinoFab software, tooling databases, machine parameters, and programming standards.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for RhinoFab programming and operation.
- Train and support fabrication personnel on proper machine operation and workflow integration.
- Identify opportunities to improve automation, production efficiency, fabrication accuracy, and machine utilization.
Equipment operation
- Safely operate fabrication equipment including the RhinoFab automated fabrication system, CNC machinery, cutoff and miter saws, drills and routers, brake metal machinery, forklifts, overhead cranes, and material handling equipment.
- Ensure equipment is operated safely, efficiently, and according to manufacturer specifications.
- Report equipment malfunctions and operational concerns promptly.
Quality assurance
- Inspect fabricated components throughout the production process to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Verify completed parts meet fabrication specifications and customer requirements.
- Minimize fabrication errors, material waste, and rework.
- Maintain proper handling and storage procedures to prevent material damage.
- Identify and report quality concerns immediately.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action when fabrication issues occur.
Production support
- Support daily production schedules and workflow priorities.
- Collaborate with the Shop Manager to prioritize RhinoFab production schedules and fabrication sequencing.
- Ensure fabrication programs are released accurately and on time to support customer commitments.
- Assist with material staging, organization, packaging, labeling, and preparation for shipment or installation.
- Coordinate effectively with shop personnel to maintain efficient production flow.
- Assist in evaluating production bottlenecks and recommending automation and process improvements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, quality, efficiency, and productivity.
Safety responsibilities
- Follow all company safety procedures and OSHA requirements.
- Properly utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain safe material handling practices at all times.
- Operate fabrication equipment safely and responsibly.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, equipment concerns, and near misses immediately.
- Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
Equipment maintenance and support
- Perform daily equipment inspections and operational checks.
- Conduct basic preventative maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Monitor RhinoFab performance and identify maintenance needs before failures occur.
- Coordinate machine service requirements with management and equipment vendors.
- Help maintain fabrication tools, machinery, and work areas in proper working condition.
Other duties
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Support company initiatives focused on operational excellence, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.
Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Technical training in fabrication, CNC programming, manufacturing technology, or a related field preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 7 years of aluminum or metal fabrication experience required, preferably in commercial glazing, storefront, or curtain wall systems.
- Experience operating CNC or automated fabrication equipment required.
- RhinoFab programming and operation experience strongly preferred.
- Experience in a high-production manufacturing environment preferred.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Strong understanding of architectural aluminum fabrication methods, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, elevations, fabrication specifications, and CAD drawings.
- Strong understanding of CNC programming concepts and automated manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of machine optimization, workflow efficiency, and production planning.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong mathematical and measurement skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Forklift and overhead crane experience preferred.
Physical requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull aluminum extrusions and fabrication materials.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and more with assistance or lifting equipment.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, twisting, and repetitive hand movements.
- Ability to safely handle long lineal materials and fabrication components.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with varying temperatures, noise levels, and production demands.
