Assistant Estimator – Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Estimator

Department: Estimating

Reports To: Chief Estimator / Estimating Manager

Position Summary

The Assistant Estimator supports the estimating team by preparing accurate cost estimates, gathering project information, coordinating with vendors and subcontractors, job takeoffs, and assisting with bid preparation. This role is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, organized, and interested in developing a career in construction estimating.

Key Responsibilities

Assist in preparing cost estimates for construction projects.
Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents.
Perform quantity takeoffs using estimating software or manual methods.
Request and compare quotes from subcontractors and suppliers.
Maintain bid documents, project files, and estimating databases.
Assist with preparing bid proposals and submission packages.
Communicate with project managers, vendors, subcontractors, and clients as needed.
Track bid deadlines and ensure timely completion of estimating tasks.
Update pricing information, labor rates, and material costs.
Support post-bid reviews and maintain historical cost data.
Perform other administrative and estimating duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in construction management, or a related field preferred.
0–2 years of construction, estimating, or related experience in underground utilities (entry-level candidates encouraged to apply).
Basic understanding of construction methods and materials is preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Experience with estimating software (such as PlanSwift, Bluebeam, ProEst, or similar) is a plus.
Ability to read construction drawings and specifications is preferred.
Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
Attend occasional mandatory pre bid meetings.
Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
May occasionally visit construction sites, requiring walking on uneven terrain and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Work Environment

Office-based with occasional field visits.
Standard Monday–Friday schedule 7:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. with additional hours during peak bid periods as needed.
