Overview:

Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse, the behavioral health patient safety attendant will provide care to a patient by sitting with and diligently watching the patient while meeting the established criteria in accordance with established methods and procedures of the Medical Center.

Responsibilities:

Maintain continuous visual observation of assigned patients to ensure a safe and secure environment at all times.
Monitor and report changes in patient behavior, mental status, condition, or activities to the Registered Nurse (RN) immediately.
Adhere to all patient safety protocols, including Close Observation and Suicidal Patient Monitoring procedures.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient environment, reporting maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
Follow infection prevention and control practices, including universal precautions.
Accurately document patient observations and activities on required monitoring records and observation logs.
Provide clear and accurate shift-to-shift reports, communicating patient status, observations, and changes in care plans.
Use verbal redirection and approved de-escalation techniques to support patient safety and manage challenging behaviors.
Establish and maintain appropriate professional boundaries while interacting with patients.
Provide patients with routine explanations regarding care and activities while refraining from counseling or offering personal opinions.
Immediately notify nursing staff when patient assistance or intervention is required.
Escort patients to diagnostic tests, procedures, therapeutic activities, and other scheduled appointments as needed.
Demonstrate focused attention on patient observation duties, minimizing distractions and maintaining vigilance throughout the shift.
Uphold organizational values and standards of professionalism, compassion, respect, and patient-centered care.
Collaborate effectively with nursing staff and other healthcare team members to support quality patient care.
Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent required or must obtain GED within 6 months of hire date.
Must read the BBMC Close Observation and Suicidal Patient Protocols and successfully complete the accompanying test. CPI certified.
Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset Basic Computer skills.
