Temple Emunah Facilities Maintenance Associate

About Temple Emunah

Temple Emunah is a dynamic, engaging, inclusive, and welcoming Conservative congregation. We offer preschool, youth and adult education, holiday and community programs, and daily morning and evening services. We are committed to providing a warm, safe, and well-maintained environment for our members, guests, and staff.

Position Summary

Temple Emunah is seeking a dependable and skilled Part-to Full-Time Facilities Maintenance Associate / Handyman.

(25–40 hours per week) to help maintain our synagogue, grounds, and facilities. This position plays an essential role in ensuring our building is clean, safe, functional, and welcoming while supporting the daily operations of the congregation.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in custodial services, carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance, along with working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical systems. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, detail-oriented, dependable, and capable of managing both routine maintenance and small projects efficiently. The position also requires professionalism, excellent customer service, and the ability to work cooperatively with staff, members, volunteers, and outside vendors.

The typical schedule includes weekend hours 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. and some weekday afternoons (generally between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.). Flexibility is required to support evening services, special events, and holiday programming as needed.

Custodial Duties

Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming facility.
Set up and break down rooms for worship services, educational programs, meetings, and special events.
Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, spot-clean carpets, empty trash and recycling, and clean interior windows.
Sanitize restrooms, kitchens, tables, chairs, high-touch surfaces, and shared equipment.
Restock paper products, soap, and other custodial supplies.
Clean event spaces before and after programs and functions.
Keep storage rooms and custodial closets clean and organized.
Remove snow and ice from entrances and walkways and apply salt or sand as needed.
Assist with outdoor event setup and breakdown when required.

Maintenance Duties

Perform general repairs and preventive maintenance throughout the facility.
Repair minor electrical, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, and building-related issues.
Perform painting, drywall repair, patching, carpentry, and light demolition work.
Assist in estimating projects, sourcing materials, and obtaining bids when appropriate.
Maintain and repair common areas, exterior structures, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
Conduct routine building inspections and report maintenance concerns or safety hazards.
Follow all applicable safety procedures and building code requirements.
Maintain work orders, maintenance records, materials inventories, and project costs.
Coordinate maintenance activities with staff, vendors, and contractors.
Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repairs.
Perform light groundskeeping and exterior cleanup.
Oversee landscaping, snow removal, and other contracted services.
Maintain annual preventive maintenance schedules.
Work collaboratively with custodial staff and other team members.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school or technical training preferred.
Must successfully pass a CORI background check.
At least three years of custodial, facilities, construction, maintenance, or related experience preferred.
Experience with carpentry, painting, drywall repair, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general handyman work.
Working knowledge of building systems, maintenance tools, and materials.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple priorities.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe environment.
Good communication, organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
Positive, team-focused attitude with strong customer service skills.
Valid driver's license preferred.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., move furniture and equipment, climb stairs and ladders, and work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, climbing, and moving equipment. The employee must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and perform work both indoors and outdoors throughout the year in varying weather conditions.

Demonstrate reliability, initiative, and pride in maintaining Temple Emunah's facilities. Work collaboratively with the Executive Director, Facilities Committee, custodial staff, and other team members to ensure the synagogue remains safe, clean, and welcoming for all.
