Job Description:
Chief Financial Officer
Summary:
Our organization brings together three complementary businesses under one banner: a commercial construction firm, a residential land developer, and a fee-build homebuilder. We provide construction management, general contracting, land acquisition and development, and fee-based homebuilding services for clients ranging from commercial real estate developers to business owners and homebuilding partners. We are seeking a seasoned Chief Financial Officer who has extensive experience in construction, land development, and homebuilding finance. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will serve as a key strategic leader responsible for driving the company's financial performance, stability, and long-term growth across all three business lines. This role owns the company's cash flow strategy, capital structure, and forecasting, and oversees all financial operations, including budgeting, job cost accounting, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, multi-entity consolidation, and corporate compliance. A proven, hands-on track record in cash flow management, alternative and creative financing, and forecasting the candidate has personally built and successfully implemented is essential. The CFO partners closely with the owner, executive leadership, project teams, and business unit leaders to strengthen profitability, manage enterprise risk, and fund disciplined, sustainable expansion. The CFO will lead the development and execution of the company's financial strategy, ensuring strong, predictable cash flow, disciplined capital allocation, and long-term financial health. Responsibilities include sourcing and structuring project- and entity-level financing, and managing enterprise risk, insurance programs, bonding capacity, and key banking, lender, surety, and investor relationships. The CFO oversees treasury, capital planning, and the company's investment portfolio, ensuring resources are aligned with organizational priorities. There is a genuine opportunity to grow within the company.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the company's overall financial strategy across all three business lines — commercial construction, residential land development, and fee-build homebuilding
- Own cash flow forecasting and management across multiple concurrent projects and entities, including draw schedules, retainage, lot takedowns, subcontractor and vendor payment timing, and working-capital needs
- Source, structure, and managing financing to fund operations and growth, including construction loans, acquisition & development (A&D) loans, lines of credit, vertical construction financing, joint-venture equity, mezzanine debt, and other alternative or creative capital
- Build, maintain, and continuously improve company-wide and project-level forecasting, budgeting, and pro forma models, and lead the annual budgeting process with the owner and business unit leaders
- Oversee job cost accounting, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, ensuring accurate margins and early identification of cost overruns
- Direct multi-entity accounting, consolidation, and intercompany allocations across all affiliated companies
- Build and manage relationships with banks, lenders, sureties, bonding agents, investors, and equity partners, and maximize bonding and surety capacity to support project pursuits
- Lead capital planning and capital allocation, deploying resources to the highest-return projects and opportunities
- Oversee treasury, banking, and the company's investment portfolio
- Establish and enforce internal controls, financial policies, and standardized procedures across all entities
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, and present results, forecasts, and risks to ownership and the leadership team
- Manage enterprise risk and the company's insurance programs, including general liability, builder's risk, and workers' compensation coverage
- Lead tax strategy and planning in coordination with outside CPAs, including entity structuring and construction- and real estate-specific tax considerations
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations — accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and payroll (administered through a third-party provider)
- Provide financial oversight of the company's ESOP, including accurate valuation, governance, and reporting
- Partner with the owner and executive team on strategic decisions, land and project acquisitions, and long-term growth planning
Supervisory Responsibilities and Work Environment:
The CFO will report directly to the company owner and will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team. The CFO provides strategic financial leadership and oversight across Montgomery Construction and its affiliated land development and homebuilding entities, directing the finance and accounting function and managing finance and accounting staff. The work environment will consist of the company’s office.
Education and Other Requirements:
- Direct, hands-on experience in commercial construction, residential land development, and/or fee-build homebuilding finance is required
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including senior leadership as a CFO, VP of Finance, or Controller in the construction, development, or homebuilding industry
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field required; MBA, CPA, and/or CFA strongly preferred
- Proven, hands-on track record of cash flow management across multiple concurrent projects and entities
- Demonstrated success sourcing and structuring alternative and creative financing — construction and A&D loans, lines of credit, JV equity, mezzanine debt, and similar — and managing lender, surety, and investor relationships
- Proven ability to build and implement accurate, actionable forecasts and budgets, with a track record of forecasts the candidate personally developed and stood behind
- Strong command of job cost accounting, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and multi-entity consolidation
- Experience selecting, implementing, and optimizing construction and development accounting/ERP systems (e.g., Sage 300 CRE/Timberline, Procore, Builder trend, QuickBooks, or comparable platforms)
- High level of integrity, sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality
- Strong understanding of bonding, surety, insurance, banking, and regulatory compliance within the construction and development industry
- Ability to establish and enforce internal controls, financial policies, and standardized procedures across multiple entities
- Proven ability to build, lead, and develop a finance and accounting team
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial modeling skills
- Ability to interpret complex financial data and make strategic, cost-effective decisions
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with multiple competing priorities
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with banking, surety, and capital partners
- Strong communication (verbal, written, and presentation) and interpersonal skills, including the ability to present to ownership, lenders, sureties, and partners
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and highly organized
