The Marine Ecophysiology Lab at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a Research Specialist I to support research activities in the effects of environmental stressors on aquatic animal physiology. The primary responsibilities of this position are to conduct laboratory analyses, maintain laboratory organization and safety, and support day-to-day research operations. The successful candidate will perform biological and physiological laboratory assays; process and organize biological samples; maintain laboratory equipment and supplies; manage chemical inventories and safety documentation; organize research data and laboratory records; and assist with the supervision and management of undergraduate research volunteers.
In addition to laboratory responsibilities, the Research Specialist will assist with the operation and maintenance of aquatic mesocosm systems, routine aquatic animal husbandry, water quality monitoring, and field and laboratory experiments.
This position is designed as a training opportunity for individuals seeking research experience before pursuing graduate education or a career in aquatic/marine biology. The successful candidate will receive hands-on training in experimental design, aquatic research systems, physiological and biochemical techniques, data analysis, scientific communication, and laboratory management. As the employee develops technical skills and research independence, there will be opportunities to take increasing ownership of research activities and pursue independent projects aligned with the laboratory's research objectives. These opportunities may include designing and conducting experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, presenting research findings at scientific meetings, and contributing to manuscript preparation and publication.
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in biology, marine science, environmental science, physiology, or a related field.
· Experience performing standard laboratory techniques and maintaining accurate laboratory records.
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
· Demonstrated ability to work proactively, identify tasks and laboratory needs, and take initiative with minimal supervision.
Desirable Qualifications
· Experience conducting biological, biochemical, physiological, or molecular laboratory assays.
· Experience managing laboratory safety programs, chemical inventories, or regulatory compliance.
· Experience with aquatic organisms, animal husbandry, aquaculture, or aquatic research systems.
· Experience with field sampling and environmental monitoring.
· Experience with data management and analysis.
