Legal Talent Manager
Position Summary
Our multi-office law firm is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining exceptional legal talent. We are seeking an experienced and strategic Legal Talent Manager to lead all aspects of attorney recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, and retention initiatives across the firm.
This role is ideal for a practicing or former attorney interested in shaping the careers of legal professionals, as well as experienced talent management, attorney recruiting, attorney development, human resources, or legal operations professionals who thrive in a law firm environment. The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to firm leadership, help drive the firm's talent strategy, and play a key role in building a high-performing, engaged legal workforce.
Location: This is an onsite position requiring regular in-office attendance.
The Legal Talent Manager serves as a strategic partner to firm leadership and practice group leaders on all aspects of attorney talent management. This individual will oversee the full attorney lifecycle—from recruitment and onboarding through professional development, performance management, advancement, engagement, and retention. The role requires a proactive, relationship-focused professional who can balance strategic planning with day-to-day execution while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities
Attorney Recruiting & Hiring
- Lead all aspects of lateral and entry-level attorney recruitment, including sourcing, interviewing, and the offer process.
- Partner with practice group leaders to assess hiring needs and support workforce planning initiatives.
- Manage on-campus recruiting programs, summer associate programs, and law school relationships.
- Coordinate with external recruiters and search firms and manage recruiting budgets.
- Develop and implement strategies to attract top legal talent aligned with the firm's growth objectives.
Attorney Development & Training
- Design and implement attorney onboarding programs to accelerate integration, engagement, and productivity.
- Develop and manage ongoing professional development initiatives, including CLE programs, skills training, mentoring, and leadership development.
- Collaborate with firm leadership to identify competency frameworks and career progression expectations by level and practice area.
- Partner with attorneys to create individualized development plans and support long-term career growth.
Performance Management
- Manage the attorney evaluation process for associates and counsel, ensuring consistency, fairness, and alignment with firm goals.
- Support practice group leaders in delivering meaningful feedback and coaching.
- Analyze performance data and identify trends to improve retention, engagement, and productivity.
Practice Group & Firm Collaboration
- Serve as a liaison between attorneys, practice groups, and firm leadership on talent-related matters.
- Support practice group leaders with staffing, workload management, succession planning, and team development.
- Collaborate with firm leadership to align talent strategies with business objectives, client service goals, and firm growth initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Juris Doctor (JD) or graduate degree in Human Resources preferred.
- Minimum of five years of experience in legal recruiting, attorney development or a similar role in a mid-size law firm.
- Strong understanding of law firm structure, practice groups, and attorney career progression.
- Exceptional communication, organization and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate effectively with senior leadership.
