The above posted position will fill the vacancy of a full-time Wastewater Plant Operator. The position requires the applicant to have, or pass, the Montana certification to be a Class 1-C wastewater operator within 3 years. A $1.70+/- per hour raise is earned upon certification. POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
DEPARTMENT: Sewer
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Wastewater Lead Operator, City Administrator, Mayor
SUMMARY OF WORK: Operates and maintains wastewater treatment plant and collection system according to state and federal regulations. Operates all city equipment to perform city services duties.
JOB CHARACTERISTICS:
Nature of Work: This position performs technical duties requiring ability to operate and maintain facilities and equipment. Position requires work in extreme temperatures and/or wet, icy conditions; must be available for 24 hours on-call for emergencies or unexpected conditions every third week and must respond to plant emergencies via city cellphone during that week. Must reside within 10 minutes travel time from the sewer plant. Must exercise safety precautions in dealing with hazardous sewage, chemicals, acids, and materials, maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
Personal Contacts: Frequent contact with the public and customers; daily contact with the Supervisor and other operators to coordinate work.
Supervision Received: Daily supervision from the Wastewater Lead Person.
Essential Functions: Position requires ability to: communicate; calculate; utilize read and understand complex laws and regulations; maintain records; prepare reports; operate and maintain equipment; perform testing and analyzing procedures; visually inspect facilities; lift heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds; work in confined areas; walk and crawl on uneven ground; use hand tools; climb stairs and ladders.
AREAS OF JOB ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:
- Operates and maintains sewage treatment plant. Does daily lab work; total suspended solid tests, pH tests, e coli tests, suspended solids tests, and dissolved oxygen testing. Does algebraic equations for test results. Troubleshoots problems, repairs pumps, blowers, aerators, motors, drives, chains, etc. Makes operational adjustments to plant to maintain maximum performance. Mixes polymers for water and sludge separation. Operates sludge press, jet cleaner and vacuum inductor. Sets pumps and valves for proper distribution of waste. Operates heavy equipment for handling sludge; operates gas meter and safety equipment for confined space entry; fills out daily logs and reports. Performs other related duties as required.
JOB REQUREMENTS:
Knowledge: This position requires a knowledge of mechanical, biological and hydraulic functions of wastewater; knowledge of process control systems and computers. Knowledge of first aid, water quality laws and hazardous waste laws. Knowledge of electricity, plumbing, pipe fitting, welding procedures, and pumps. Knowledge of operating backhoe, loaders, jet cleaners, vacuum inductor, and dump trucks. Knowledge of CPR.
Skills: This position requires skills in lab analysis, calculating, computers, maintenance and operation of city equipment.
Abilities: This position requires the ability to: utilize computers, operate heavy equipment, maintain equipment, pay attention to accuracy, supervise, climb ladders, lift heavy objects, work in cold weather, maintain confidentiality, keep accurate records, communicate effectively orally and in writing, follow verbal and written instructions, establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to the following points.
- Coursework in sanitary engineering, math, hydraulics and mechanics preferred or equivalent coursework and experience.
- Two years’ experience with wastewater/water.
- Must possess Class 1C Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification or have the ability to obtain one within 3 years.
- Must possess First Aid and CPR card or have the ability to obtain one.
- Must possess valid State of Montana driver's license.
- Must possess a valid State of Montana Commercial Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one.
- Must maintain, or obtain and retain, state license for wastewater by attending Continuing Education Programs.
- A High School diploma.
