Hermes Landscaping is a nationally recognized, award-winning, progressive company that has proudly served the Kansas City metro for over 60 years. We operate across commercial construction, landscape maintenance, snow & ice management, and residential design-build.

As a nationally recognized, award-winning leader in the $188 billion landscaping industry, we're looking for a Controller who wants to do more than manage the numbers. We are looking for someone who does more than report the numbers. We want a leader who understands the business, develops people, improves processes, and helps drive strategic decisions.

This opportunity comes at a unique time in our company's history, as our beloved Controller prepares for retirement after more than 40 years of dedicated service. She has helped build the financial foundation that supports who we are today, and we are now seeking a leader who will honor that legacy while guiding our accounting team and helping shape the future of Hermes Landscaping.

The Role

This is a senior leadership position responsible for the financial health and integrity of the organization. You will work directly with the CEO and executive leadership team to provide accurate, timely, and actionable financial information while strengthening the systems, processes, and people needed to support continued growth.

What You'll Be Doing

Accounting Operations

Oversee AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, billing, and invoicing
Ensure accuracy, consistency, and strong internal controls

Financial Reporting & Visibility

Lead month-end close and improve speed and accuracy
Build reporting that helps leadership understand performance, not just numbers

Job Costing & Business Insight

Improve job costing, margin visibility, and operational reporting
Partner with operations to connect financials to real-world performance

Process Improvement & Systems

Identify inefficiencies and implement better processes
Help evolve systems and workflows as the company grows

Team Leadership

Lead, develop, and mentor accounting staff
Create accountability, structure, and a strong team culture

Audit & Compliance

Support year-end close and work with external auditors
Maintain compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements

Non-Transactional Accounting Functions

Lead 401(k) management and administration
Oversee tax coordination, filings, and compliance processes
Manage sales commission calculations, tracking, and payouts
Lead banking relationships, treasury activity, and cash management

Experience

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
10+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience
5+ years leading and developing accounting teams
Experience in construction, landscaping, manufacturing, or other job-costing industries is preferred
Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and GAAP
