Job Title: Administrative Legal Clerk (Entry / Journey / Senior)

Location: Auburn, CA / South Placer, CA — Placer County Sheriff's Office

Salary: $48,776–$60,985/year (Entry) | $53,809–$67,205/year (Journey) | $59,342–$74,110/year, up to $87,879 with incentives (Senior)

About the RoleThe Placer County Sheriff's Office is hiring Administrative Legal Clerks at the Entry, Journey, and Senior levels for our Corrections Division (jail) and Sheriff's Support Services Records Unit. No prior law enforcement experience is required at any level. Positions perform administrative, clerical, and legal document processing duties — including warrants, booking, records, and front-office/public contact work.

Corrections Division positions work 12-hour rotating shifts (days start at 5:00 AM or 5:00 PM), including nights, weekends, and holidays, with shift rotations every 4 months based on seniority.

Levels We're Hiring For:

Administrative Legal Clerk – Entry — $48,776–$60,985/year

Entry-level class — little or no directly related experience required
Works under immediate supervision while learning the job, progressing toward general supervision
Requirements: Minimum 2 years of clerical experience; equivalent to completion of 12th grade
On-the-job training provided; expected to handle full entry-level duties within 12 months

Administrative Legal Clerk – Journey — $53,809–$67,205/year

Full journey-level class — performs the complete range of duties with only occasional instruction
Requirements: Experience comparable to the Entry level (typically 2+ years of related clerical/legal-clerical experience); equivalent to completion of 12th grade
Must independently perform legal clerical work, interpret legal/reporting codes and statutes, and maintain confidentiality of restricted records
Must type accurately at 45 WPM
Additional knowledge of legal document processing, terminology, and forms required

Administrative Legal Clerk – Senior — $59,342–$74,110/year, up to $87,879 with incentives

Senior-level class — requires a minimum of 3 years of legal clerical experience
Often serves as shift supervisor over an assigned team in the Records Unit or Corrections Division
Highest level of independent judgment and oversight responsibility in the series

Pay & Incentives (Corrections Division assignments)

5% Jail Incentive Pay
7.5% night shift differential
$800/year uniform allowance
CalPERS contributions, EAP access, tuition reimbursement up to $1,200/year

Requirements for All Applicants

Strong attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing legal documents, arrest/incident records, and reports
Comfortable working in a law enforcement/custody environment with public contact
Pass a background investigation and pre-employment medical evaluation prior to hire
