Overview
We’re looking for a Product Designer & UX Specialist who loves solving problems, improving how things work, and making complex software feel simple.
At MIPS, we build software and technology solutions used by county officials across Nebraska every day. Our products support everything from property assessment and taxes to records, GIS, websites, and online services. Some of these processes are complex. Your job is to help make them feel a whole lot less complicated.
You’ll work directly with the people who actually use our software—assessors, treasurers, clerks, support staff, product leaders, and developers—to understand what works, what doesn’t, and what could be better. Then you’ll turn those conversations into smarter workflows, cleaner interfaces, useful prototypes, and better products.
Our work matters. We’re a growing team that likes to laugh, solve problems together, try new ideas, and get a lot done. We value people who jump in, help their teammates, take ownership, and have fun along the way.
In short: we work hard, we enjoy working together, and we get stuff done.
What You’ll Do
- Talk with real customers and learn how they actually use our software—not just how we think they use it.
- Dig into workflows, frustrations, workarounds, and “why does it do that?” moments and help turn them into better experiences.
- Create user flows, wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and polished interface designs.
- Use Figma or similar tools to take ideas from a rough sketch to something people can see, test, and react to.
- Work side-by-side with product leaders, customer support, subject-matter experts, and developers to bring ideas to life.
- Help simplify complex government processes into software that feels intuitive and practical.
- Conduct usability testing and gather customer feedback to see what works—and fix what doesn’t.
- Help establish consistent design standards and reusable patterns across MIPS products.
- Design experiences that work well across desktop, tablet, mobile, and web.
- Keep accessibility and usability in mind from the beginning rather than treating them as an afterthought.
- Help modernize products across assessment, treasurer, clerk, GIS, websites, online services, and future MIPS platforms.
- Look at existing software with fresh eyes and ask, “How could we make this easier?”
- Clearly communicate designs and ideas so developers know what we’re building and why.
- Be a voice for the customer throughout the product-development process.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in UX design, product design, interaction design, or a related field, preferably involving software or web applications.
- A portfolio that shows how you think—not just pretty screens.
- Experience with Figma or comparable UX/UI design and prototyping tools.
- A solid understanding of usability, information architecture, interaction design, responsive design, and accessibility.
- The ability to take something complicated and make it understandable.
- Experience talking with users, gathering feedback, or conducting usability testing.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with everyone from customers to developers.
- Curiosity, good judgment, and a willingness to ask questions.
- The ability to manage multiple priorities without losing sight of the details.
- A collaborative attitude and a willingness to jump in wherever needed.
Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, APIs, analytics tools, Agile development, GIS, government software, property assessment, taxation, or records management is great—but you don’t need to check every box. We can teach you county government. We can teach you our products. What’s harder to teach is curiosity, creativity, empathy, good problem-solving skills, and the desire to make things better for those around you.
Why MIPS?
Because you’ll get to work on products that people actually use to get important work done.
You won’t be designing something that disappears into a presentation and never gets built. You’ll meet the people using our software, hear what they need, work with the team building it, and see your ideas make a real difference.
You’ll also join a team that is growing quickly and isn’t afraid to try new things. We like people with ideas. We like people who take ownership. We like people who make the people around them better.
And yes—we like to have a lot of fun too.
If you’re looking for a place where you can create, collaborate, solve real problems, laugh with your coworkers, and help shape the future of our products, we’d love to meet you.
