In This Role as a Carrier Sales Representative you will work alongside an experienced Carrier Sales team responsible for securing reliable transportation capacity, negotiating rates, building carrier relationships, and supporting the successful movement of customer freight throughout North America.
This is a hands-on role that requires strong communication, urgency, organization, negotiation skills, and the ability to manage multiple shipments and carrier relationships at the same time. You will be expected to perform the full responsibilities of a Carrier Sales Representative while also placing a strong emphasis on identifying, developing, and maintaining new carrier relationships.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable working within a close-knit team environment while taking personal ownership of growing their carrier network. Success in this role requires someone who can service today’s freight while continuously building the carrier relationships Roots Logistics will need tomorrow.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work alongside other Carrier Sales Representatives in a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment.
- Secure qualified carrier capacity for customer shipments throughout North America.
- Communicate with carriers, dispatchers, drivers, owner-operators, and fleet managers regarding available freight and equipment.
- Negotiate competitive and sustainable transportation rates.
- Match available carrier capacity with customer freight based on location, equipment type, timing, service requirements, and pricing.
- Prospect for and develop relationships with new carriers.
- Build a personal network of dependable carrier partners that can support recurring and future freight opportunities.
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing carriers.
- Conduct regular outbound calls to identify available equipment and new transportation partners.
- Use load boards, referrals, internal systems, industry contacts, and outbound prospecting to source carrier capacity.
- Present available freight clearly and professionally to prospective carrier partners.
- Understand carrier needs, preferred lanes, equipment availability, and operational capabilities.
- Identify opportunities to convert transactional carrier relationships into consistent, long-term partnerships.
- Assist with carrier onboarding and ensure all required information and documentation are completed.
- Confirm that carriers meet company, customer, insurance, safety, and compliance requirements before being assigned freight.
- Work closely with Operations, Tracking, Customer Sales, and other internal teams to support successful load execution.
- Communicate shipment requirements, appointment information, routing instructions, and customer expectations accurately.
- Confirm carrier acceptance and verify that all load details are clearly understood.
- Monitor assigned shipments and remain engaged throughout the transportation process.
- Assist with resolving carrier-related delays, service failures, missed appointments, fall-offs, and communication issues.
- Recover loads when a scheduled carrier cancels or is unable to complete an assignment.
- Maintain accurate carrier, rate, shipment, and communication records within the company’s Transportation Management System.
- Provide timely and accurate updates to internal team members.
- Monitor freight market conditions, carrier availability, capacity changes, and transportation pricing.
- Meet established activity, carrier development, gross margin, service, and performance expectations.
- Demonstrate consistent attendance, dependability, professionalism, and punctuality.
- Perform additional duties as business needs require.
Qualifications
- Previous freight brokerage, carrier sales, dispatch, transportation, logistics, or related experience preferred.
- Previous sales, business development, recruiting, sourcing, or relationship-management experience strongly preferred.
- Strong desire to develop new carrier relationships and grow a dependable carrier network.
- Comfortable making a high volume of outbound calls and initiating conversations with new carriers.
- Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work successfully within a close-knit and collaborative team.
- Competitive, self-motivated, and driven to achieve measurable results.
- Ability to balance individual goals with the overall success of the Carrier Sales team.
- Strong understanding of customer service and the importance of reliable carrier partnerships.

- Experience using a Transportation Management System preferred.
- Experience with McLeod Software is a plus.
- Experience using freight load boards and carrier sourcing tools is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Reliable transportation to and from the Chicago office.

Schedule
This is a full-time position based in our Chicago office.
Regular Workdays: Monday through Friday
The specific daily working hours will be discussed during the interview process based on the operational needs of the company.
Final compensation will be based on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and demonstrated ability to build and manage carrier relationships.
This is a full-time W-2 position.
