Mechanical Design Engineer (SolidWorks) – Custom Fabrication

Location: Cokato, MN

About Outshaped

Outshaped designs and manufactures custom architectural displays, molds, patterns, and sculptural structures for clients across a wide range of industries. Our work often begins with sketches, scan data, or rough CAD and evolves into highly detailed physical structures produced through CNC machining and fabrication.

Many of our projects involve complex geometry, organic forms, or large-scale components that must be engineered for manufacturability, assembly, and transport. We are looking for a technically strong design engineer who enjoys solving challenging geometry and manufacturing problems.

The Role

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer who excels at turning creative designs into manufacturable solutions. This role sits at the center of our design process, bridging the gap between concept modeling and production.

You will work closely with designers, machinists, and project leads to determine how parts will actually be built, assembled, and shipped. The ideal candidate has strong CAD skills, understands fabrication and CNC machining constraints, and enjoys working on unique, non-standard projects.

Responsibilities

Evaluate incoming design concepts, scan data, and customer CAD files
Repair, rebuild, or refine models to create clean, manufacturable geometry
Determine machining strategies and part breakdowns for large or complex components
Design structural features such as flanges, reinforcement, alignment systems, and assembly features
Plan part splits and assemblies to fit machine capacities and ensure proper reassembly
Work with designers to ensure models are ready for customer approval
Collaborate with drafting staff to produce accurate production and assembly drawings
Communicate with machinists and programmers to ensure designs translate smoothly into production
Maintain CAD organization and modeling standards across projects

Ideal Candidate

The right person for this role has extensive experience designing parts that are actually manufactured, not just modeled in CAD. You should be comfortable thinking through machining strategies, fabrication constraints, and assembly methods while designing parts.

Candidates who thrive in this role typically have experience in custom manufacturing, fabrication shops, mold or tooling design, CNC environments, or similar hands-on industries.

This role is best suited for engineers and designers who enjoy solving real-world manufacturing challenges. If your background is primarily theoretical engineering, product styling, or basic drafting without exposure to fabrication or machining environments, this position may not be the right fit.

Required Skills

Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks
Strong experience with 3D modeling, assemblies, and surfacing
Understanding of design for manufacturing (DFM)
Experience working with CNC machining or fabrication processes
Ability to interpret and repair imperfect customer CAD files
Experience splitting large components into manufacturable assemblies
Strong problem-solving and communication skills

Preferred Experience

Working with scan data or mesh cleanup
Complex surface modeling
Large format machining or fabrication
Reverse engineering geometry
Custom fabrication or prototype environments
