Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Ultrasound Technologist to perform diagnostic sonography procedures and produce high-quality images for interpretation by Radiologists or licensed independent practitioners.
The Ultrasound Technologist applies sonic energy and advanced imaging techniques to assist in the diagnosis of medical conditions. The technologist is responsible for verifying physician orders, confirming patient information and history, following department protocols, monitoring patients throughout examinations, documenting procedures, and ensuring images are properly processed and archived.
The ideal candidate demonstrates sound professional judgment, strong communication and problem-solving skills, attention to patient safety, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Diagnostic Imaging & Patient Care
- Perform diagnostic ultrasound and sonography examinations according to established department protocols.
- Produce high-quality diagnostic images for Radiologist review and interpretation.
- Provide initial interpretation of examinations as permitted by department protocol.
- Verify physician orders, patient name/date of birth, medical history, and relevant clinical information before examinations.
- Continuously monitor patients throughout the examination and provide appropriate patient care.
- Assist Radiologists and authorized providers with ultrasound examinations and procedures as necessary.
- Perform and document required time-out procedures for invasive procedures.
- Coordinate patient examinations with nursing units and transportation services.
- Follow hospital-wide and departmental infection control policies and procedures.
Image Processing & PACS
- Process and prepare copies of images as required.
- Document image releases in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Verify that images are properly archived to PACS.
- Report PACS or image-archiving issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Send images to teleradiology services after hours when instructed.
- Participate in ultrasound image peer review with the Ultrasound Coordinator.
Equipment & Department Operations
- Report equipment malfunctions promptly to appropriate personnel.
- Coordinate equipment maintenance with vendors and the Ultrasound Coordinator.
- Assist with equipment and software selection when requested.
- Monitor ultrasound supplies and linens and order/restock as needed.
- Maintain equipment and supplies according to department standards.
- Assist with resource management, including inventory monitoring and equipment maintenance.
- Participate in budgeting and planning related to ultrasound equipment and supplies.
EHR, Documentation & Compliance
- Accurately document patient care activities and relevant incidents in the EHR.
- Collaborate with the EHR team, Ultrasound Coordinator, Radiology Manager, and Radiology Director regarding system changes and workflow needs.
- Stay current with regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and departmental policies.
- Assist the Ultrasound Coordinator and Radiologist with ACR accreditation activities as needed.
- Follow all hospital policies, procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
Teamwork, Training & Leadership
- Maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with coworkers, physicians, nursing staff, and other departments.
- Provide supervision and instruction to ultrasound students completing clinical rotations.
- Participate in training new employees on equipment functionality, examination protocols, and protocol modifications.
- Support efficient daily patient flow and staff scheduling.
- Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, dependability, and effective communication.
- Attend required training programs, department meetings, and professional development activities.
Safety & Emergency Preparedness
- Follow hospital, departmental, governmental, and accrediting-agency safety guidelines.
- Attend required safety training programs.
- Participate in fire drills and understand responsibilities within the Life Safety Program.
- Understand responsibilities within the Emergency Preparedness Program and participate in disaster drills as appropriate.
- Follow all patient safety and infection control standards.
Required Qualifications
- Less than 1 year of experience accepted.
- Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited Sonography program.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective organizational, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate professionally and diplomatically with physicians, clinical staff, peers, and leadership.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to adapt to changing healthcare environments and workflows.
- Computer proficiency, including the ability to collect, analyze, and utilize computerized data.
- Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule when necessary.
Preferred Experience
- 1–2 years of experience in Special Imaging/Ultrasound.
Required Certifications & Licensure
- BLS Certification
- AND one of the following:
- ARDMS – Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), Abdomen
- ARDMS – Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
