SUMMARY Counselors take an active part in the development and delivery of counseling services for survivors of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Therapists provide counseling/intake services and conduct in-person individual and group counseling. In addition to client services, counselors develop and present staff trainings. Therapists regularly collaborate with advocates and attend supervision to insure best practice client care. Therapists adhere to codes of ethics and recognized standards of practice.
GOALS: Provide compassionate trauma-informed support and the highest level of service to all survivors and non-offending family members to assist them in rebuilding their lives.
Collaborate with and maintain professional relationships with local, state and federal criminal justice professionals and local social service providers. Maintain current knowledge of local, state and federal sexual assault, domestic violence, hate crime, and laws affecting crime victims.
GENERAL COUNSELOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Counselors deliver specialized and trauma-informed individual and group counseling services for sexual abuse and domestic violence survivors, and survivors of human trafficking and their non-offending family members.
- Counselors deliver victim-centered counseling with the goal of supporting the victim’s recovery process through listening, encouraging, validating, reflecting, giving resources, and providing a safe counseling environment.
- Counselors maintain accurate client records including intakes case notes, treatment plans, assessments, consent forms, releases of information, and other information reflecting contact with, for, or about the client.
- Counselors monitor their caseloads for follow-up, documenting opening date and closing case dates.
- Counselors, with the concurrence of the Supervisor, provide clients with referrals to longer-term therapy and/or other support services.
- Counselors follow the agency grant requirements.
- Counselors answer after-hour crisis calls and provide rape crisis response.
- Counselors participate in the development and delivery of trainings to staff and volunteers on topics related to sexual assault, suicide prevention, confidentiality, trauma-informed care, neurobiology of trauma, cultural sensitivity, vicarious trauma, and self-care.
- Counselors represent RCC and provide services at off-site locations as required
- Counselors demonstrate professionalism within the agency and in the community and follow RCC ethical and confidentiality practices.
UNIQUE THERAPIST REQUIREMENTS
- Therapists must complete the minimum Rape Crisis Center’s 40-hour Sexual Assault Training Program, and Domestic Violence
- Counselors must stay current with continuing education, licensing, and insurance requirements.
- Attend Supervision weekly and other meetings as directed.
- Participate in fund-raising events as needed and directed.
- Maintain the library of research-based materials to use in training and/or presentation development including books and DVDs.
- Assist in the development and/or delivery of volunteer, staff and other in-house trainings as directed.
- Therapists must answer the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Hotlines respond to acute sexual assault victims in hospitals emergency departments.
- Educate all victims and their non-offending family members of their rights, eligibility for services and/or crime victim compensation and on the criminal justice or family process.
- Attend specialized trainings to become sensitive to the needs of rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking victims.
- Maintain detailed and organized therapy files (electronic and hard copy) in accordance with policy and procedures manual and submit to random audits to ensure quality control. Complete daily CMS entries by the end of each day.
- Provide supervisor with updated weekly and quarterly case status and case referral reports for entire caseload and initial each section.
- Participate in trainings as needed and record participation in training database. Provide up to date training to all non-advocacy staff that have telephone contact with any caller.
Ensure all victims and non-offending family members are:
- Counseled, provided crisis intervention, emotional support, criminal justice advocacy, referrals and guidance
- Educated about their right as crime victims
- Educated about the criminal justice and/or family court process
- Educated regarding available services (including medical, food, clothing, etc.) and provided multi-agency referrals (minimum 3) and provide assistance as needed.
- Provided law enforcement referrals as needed
- Provided courtroom and medical accompaniment as needed
- Provided NYS and other state Victim Compensation program claim assistance and assistance in application for eligible reimbursements and assistance with VINE registration
- Provided assistance in the preparation of Victim Impact Statements (using established format) and act as an intermediary between family and criminal justice and social service agencies (DA, PA, Probation, DSS, CSE)
- In cases of sexual assault, provide information regarding sex offender registration.
- Educated about OVS reimbursement and provided assistance in completing applications.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Train new staff and interns as directed
- Monitor and participate in on going case review and supervision
- Support Program Manager and Executive Director on attendance of agency or program meetings, research and other projects as directed.
- Participate on a volunteer basis in agency fundraising events as required.
- Participate in the new recruit screening process for staff and interns.
PROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATION REQUIRMENTS
- Master’s Degree in Social Work
- Licensed Social Worker or Psychologist and CASAC added plus
- Professional liability insurance coverage is required.
- Experience in counseling sexual assault and domestic violence survivors is preferred.
- Experience with complex trauma is preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
