AcceleRAD is the world’s leading supplier of linear particle accelerator systems. As a vertically integrated design and manufacturing company, we turn difficult engineering problems into working hardware every day. We are a small, highly technical team, so engineers have real ownership and can work across disciplines. Our systems combine electron beams, RF, high voltage, vacuum, precision mechanical design, controls, thermal management, material handling, and radiation shielding, creating an unusually broad range of interesting problems to solve. We value engineers who are curious, practical, willing to get their hands dirty, and excited to turn good ideas into real products.
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop accelerator hardware and related high-performance mechanical systems.
Description
Where our accelerator engineers focus on the accelerator itself, this role focuses on turning the accelerator, RF system, power electronics, cooling equipment, controls, shielding, and auxiliary equipment into a complete machine that can be manufactured, transported, installed, operated, and serviced. The ideal candidate has experience designing complex industrial equipment and understands packaging, cooling, electrical integration, maintainability, manufacturing, and field installation.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Develop the overall mechanical architecture and packaging of complete accelerator systems.
· Integrate accelerator, RF, modulator, electrical, cooling, vacuum, controls, shielding, material handling, and auxiliary equipment into a coherent machine.
· Own equipment layouts, envelopes, interfaces, access requirements, and service clearances.
· Design frames, cabinets, racks, structural assemblies, guards, panels, cable-management features, plumbing systems, and other system-level mechanical hardware.
· Develop cooling-water architecture including pumps, heat exchangers, manifolds, hoses, piping, instrumentation, flow requirements, and pressure-drop budgets.
· Coordinate mechanical packaging of electrical power distribution, controls cabinets, RF equipment, power supplies, and high-voltage equipment.
· Define mechanical, electrical, utility, and facility interfaces.
· Work with electrical and controls engineers to ensure the physical implementation supports wiring, grounding, cooling, safety, EMC, and maintainability requirements.
· Perform system-level thermal, structural, flow, and packaging analyses.
· Develop system bills of materials, drawings, interface-control documents, and assembly documentation.
· Design systems for efficient manufacturing, assembly, shipping, installation, and field service.
· Lead mechanical integration during system assembly and resolve issues discovered during build and test.
· Support installation and commissioning at customer sites.
· Develop standardized architecture and reusable modules to reduce engineering effort between systems.
· Lead projects or major system work packages and coordinate work across multiple engineering disciplines and suppliers.
Qualifications
· B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
· 2 – 3 years of experience designing and integrating complex industrial or scientific equipment.
· Strong 3D CAD and mechanical-layout skills.
· Experience designing equipment containing multiple interacting mechanical and electrical subsystems.
· Practical understanding of liquid cooling systems, pumps and heat exchangers, industrial plumbing, power distribution equipment, electrical cabinets and controls hardware, cable and hose routing, structural frames and enclosures, and equipment installation/service access.
· Ability to develop and control mechanical interfaces between subsystems.
· Strong understanding of manufacturability, assembly, installation, and maintainability.
· Comfortable taking ownership of an incompletely defined system and driving the details to completion.
· Ability to work effectively across mechanical, electrical, controls, RF, accelerator, manufacturing, and field-service teams.

Frequent use of computer and engineering software; regular interaction with laboratory and production hardware.
Ability to move throughout the facility and, when required, travel to suppliers or customer sites.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: This position is primarily based in a manufacturing environment and involves working with furnace, brazing, and vacuum equipment. Occasional support may also be required in the warehouse and shipping/receiving areas.
The majority of work is performed in a manufacturing facility. The employee will frequently sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or maintain balance, and use hands and fingers for grasping and handling materials. The position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
Employees will frequently perform physical activities such as bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, kneeling, crawling, and climbing. Regular use of a computer, telephone, and writing instruments is required, and employees may spend extended periods standing while conducting presentations or training.
While performing job duties, employees may occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical equipment and industrial vehicles. The manufacturing environment has a high noise level, while office areas are typically quiet to moderately noisy.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
