Lead Bookkeeper / Senior Bookkeeper

AI-Assisted Client Accounting Services

Location Long Beach, CA — on-site, firm office

Employment Type Full-time, exempt or non-exempt DOE

Compensation $60,000 – $80,000 annually, DOE (see note below)

Reports To CPA\Manager

Team First hire in a planned 3-person bookkeeping team (this role + one additional

bookkeeper), covering 50+ client QuickBooks Online files

About the Role

Holmes & Associates, CPAs is building out a dedicated bookkeeping team to sit between our client-file intake process and CPA-level tax and financial statement review. This is a newly created, high-visibility role for the right person: you will be the first hire on this team, with the expectation — assuming strong performance —that you will help train and eventually lead a second bookkeeper as the team grows to three.

You will take over client QuickBooks Online files after bank feeds are downloaded and initial reconciliation is complete, and be responsible for turning each file into a clean, fully documented, CPA-ready file — using Claude (Anthropic's AI assistant) as a core part of your daily workflow to identify issues, draft client communications, and produce review-ready documentation. Precision matters: our standard is zero errors reaching CPA review.

What You'll Do

Own the day-to-day bookkeeping cleanup for an assigned group of client QuickBooks Online files

(approximately 25 clients initially)

Run our standardized Claude-based comparative review prompts against each file to identify miscoded transactions, unresolved reconciling items, missing documentation, and open questions
Resolve everything the review process flags — correct coding, book adjusting entries, and reconcile all bank, credit card, and loan accounts to source
Communicate directly and professionally with clients to gather missing documentation and resolve open questions, in plain, clear language
Assemble a complete, well-documented file so that CPA review time is spent on judgment calls, not cleanup
Maintain a consistent, auditable standard of file quality across every client in your book
Help train and cross-train a second bookkeeper as the team grows, and be a candidate to lead the bookkeeping team going forward
Flag recurring issues or process gaps back to firm leadership to help refine our standardized workflow

What We're Looking For

5+ years of full-charge or senior bookkeeping experience, ideally in a public accounting firm or multi-client environment
Deep, hands-on QuickBooks Online expertise — bank feeds, reconciliations, chart of accounts, class/location tracking, reporting
Comfortable adopting AI tools as a core part of the workflow; prior experience with Claude, ChatGPT, or similar tools is a plus but not required — willingness and aptitude to learn is essential
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; confident and professional communicating directly with clients
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and accuracy-driven — our standard is zero errors reaching CPA review
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently across a large volume of client files without sacrificing quality
Prior experience training, mentoring, or leading other bookkeeping staff strongly preferred
QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification a plus

Compensation Note
