About Avam
Avam is an applied and material sciences company designing products, platforms, and technologies across life sciences and advanced chemistry. Through Avam Sciences and Avam Chem, we bring scientific rigor and design discipline together to solve complex problems across laboratories, industry, and everyday life.
“We Design Science” is more than a statement of what we do. It is the standard applied to how Avam looks, sounds, and communicates.
The Role
At Avam, language is part of the design system.
The Brand Writer owns Avam’s verbal identity—the language that carries “We Design Science” across every surface the company touches. Working within the Group-level Creative & Brand team, this role writes for Avam Group, Avam Sciences, and Avam Chem while maintaining a clear and cohesive voice across the portfolio.
The work includes web and brand copy, product and platform naming, packaging language, sales collateral, presentations, and executive communications. The Brand Writer also develops the voice, nomenclature, and editorial systems that allow Avam to communicate consistently as the company grows.
This is a hands-on craft role. You will establish standards, but you will also do the writing.
Scientific and technical materials are authored by Avam’s subject-matter experts. The Brand Writer serves as their editorial counterpart—refining structure, hierarchy, clarity, and voice without changing the underlying scientific substance. Subject-matter experts remain responsible for technical facts, data, claims, methods, and conclusions. Any revision that may affect meaning is returned to the appropriate expert for review.
Avam’s visual system is monochrome and deliberately restrained. The writing must meet the same standard. Every sentence earns its place.
What You’ll Do
- Own and continuously refine Avam’s verbal identity across Avam Group, Avam Sciences, and Avam Chem.
- Write clear, distinctive copy for websites, brand platforms, campaigns, product launches, packaging, sales materials, presentations, and other customer-facing experiences.
- Develop names for products, platforms, programs, technologies, and capabilities, including the rationale and naming architecture behind them.
- Establish and maintain standards for voice, terminology, nomenclature, capitalization, grammar, and usage.
- Partner with designers from the beginning of each project so that language and visual form are developed together.
- Interview executives, scientists, product specialists, commercial leaders, and other subject-matter experts to identify the strongest and clearest expression of an idea.
- Edit scientific and technical materials for clarity, organization, consistency, and readability while preserving their meaning and technical integrity.
- Draft and refine executive communications, including presentations, company statements, letters, speeches, and internal or external announcements.
- Serve as the final editorial filter for customer-facing communications, identifying weak language, inconsistencies, unsupported statements, and unnecessary complexity before publication.
- Build and maintain practical voice guides, terminology references, naming registers, messaging frameworks, and other tools that help teams communicate consistently.
- Ensure Avam Sciences and Avam Chem speak appropriately to their respective audiences while remaining unmistakably part of one company.
What You Bring
- A precise command of language, including grammar, syntax, rhythm, tone, and information hierarchy.
- Experience developing or applying a verbal identity across multiple channels and formats.
- Strong editorial judgment and the ability to improve technical material without overstating, oversimplifying, or changing its substance.
- The ability to absorb unfamiliar scientific or technical subjects, ask exact questions, and recognize when expert clarification is required.
- Experience working closely with designers and writing within visual, spatial, interface, and production constraints.
- The ability to move comfortably between strategic messaging, product naming, long-form copy, executive communications, and detailed line editing.
- The confidence to provide direct, thoughtful editorial guidance and explain the reasoning behind a recommendation.
- Strong organizational skills and close attention to consistency across concurrent projects, audiences, and business units.
- A restrained writing style that values specificity over decoration and clarity over volume.
Experience writing for science, chemistry, life sciences, technology, industrial products, healthcare, or another technically complex field is preferred. A scientific degree is not required; intellectual rigor, curiosity, and demonstrated editorial judgment matter most.
What Success Looks Like
- Avam’s writing is recognizable even when the logo is absent.
- Complex ideas become clearer without being diluted or overstated.
- Product and platform names form a coherent system that can scale with the company.
- Avam Sciences and Avam Chem retain the right vocabulary and audience nuance within a shared verbal identity.
- Scientists and other subject-matter experts trust the Brand Writer to improve communication without distorting substance.
- Copy and design are conceived together rather than assembled at the end of a project.
- Customer-facing materials are concise, accurate, intentional, and consistent.
Portfolio
Please include a focused portfolio of relevant work. We are particularly interested in examples involving:
- Brand narrative or verbal identity
- Web or product positioning
- Product, platform, or program naming
- Copy developed in close partnership with design
- Complex or technical material made clearer through editing
- Executive communications, if available
For each example, briefly describe the audience, objective, constraints, and your specific contribution. Redacted or reconstructed samples are welcome when necessary to protect confidential work.
The Standard
The right writer is exacting without being precious. You know when to remove a word, when to defend one, and when the strongest sentence is the simplest. You are comfortable working with complexity, but you never use complexity to conceal unclear thinking.
At Avam, writing is part of the design. We are looking for someone who believes it should be treated that way.
