Virginia Legal Aid Society (VLAS) is a nonprofit law firm that uses law to help thousands of low-income families in south-central Virginia every year in problems involving housing, access to health care, family stability, education, and consumer lending. Founded in 1977, VLAS does this through offices in Lynchburg, Martinsville, Danville, Farmville, and Suffolk, two practice groups, an intake/advice unit, and a healthcare enrollment services unit, all operate together as one firm.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This employee’s duties will primarily involve LawLine, VLAS’ telephone intake-and-advice system that provides help to eligible callers during their first contact with VLAS. Under the direction of the Managing Attorney of LawLine, this employee conducts telephone interviews of new applicants who call the program; asks questions using form guidance and common sense; collects demographic, income, asset and problem information in a computer database; makes appropriate referrals to VLAS local offices or community resources; gives legal advice, previously approved by an attorney, to individuals who qualify as clients; selects or drafts appropriate confirmation letters or brochures for mailing to clients, and prepares the completed database case information for review by their supervisor.
DUTIES:
- Interview all prospective clients to gather and input required case, income, asset, and demographic information about the applicant.
- Obtain a brief statement of the nature of the legal issue.
- Perform conflicts check in the program database.
- Determine whether the applicant has a problem within VLAS legal work priorities, is financially eligible for service, has no conflict with a previous client, and has a problem appropriate for referral, advice, brief service, or extended service.
- Refer callers who are ineligible or inappropriate for telephone advice services to other internal and external resources, using VLAS lists of resources.
- With applicants who are eligible and appropriate for telephone advice, ask questions using VLAS outlines, intelligence and intuition to obtain necessary facts, review VLAS resources for appropriate advice and consult with their supervisor on the accuracy of that advice if scripted VLAS advice is not clearly applicable to the client’s situation, give the advice to the client, confirm that the client understands, and terminate the call.
- Following VLAS guidelines, choose whether a follow-up brochure or letter is appropriate, choose the brochure or the text of the letter and send the letter, enter case notes, including case summary information for review by their supervisor, close the case record, and prepare for the next call.
- Participate in staff meetings and trainings for LawLine workers and local office staff.
- Travel to law- and program-related training events in Virginia, some of which may require overnight stay.
- Contribute to the operation and improvement of the LawLine system.

information.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, computer, and people skills
· Ability to work 100% remotely and provide your own internet service.
EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
· Requires bachelor’s degree or equivalent skill in analysis and writing.
· Most work can be remote but extended in-person training and some meetings take place in the VLAS south-central VA service area.
· Spanish fluency a plus.
· Successful completion of in-house training program.
COMPENSATION:
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Hourly
Salary Range: $40,907- $53,515, depending upon experience
