This position offers the opportunity to lead the accounting and finance function for a dynamic multi-entity real estate organization.
Position Summary
The Director of Accounting will lead the company's accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, tax coordination, and finance-related operations. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely financial information, supporting leadership with practical reporting and analysis, maintaining effective accounting processes and internal controls, and leading the accounting team. The successful candidate will be a hands-on accounting leader who can balance day-to-day accounting oversight with strategic financial support, process improvement, and cross-functional communication. This is a full-time in-person position, 8:30am-5:00pm Monday-Friday. Over the summer, the main office closes at 2:00pm on Fridays so team members can start their weekend early.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Leadership, Financial Reporting, and Controls
- Lead the accounting and financial reporting function for a complex portfolio of real estate, development, investment, property management, homeowner association, nonprofit, trust, and related entities.
- Oversee the monthly close process, including financial statement preparation, account reconciliations, cash balances, intercompany activity, and supporting schedules.
- Ensure financial statements and internal reports are accurate, timely, and useful for management, investors, lenders, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain and improve accounting policies, internal controls, documentation standards, reporting procedures, and accounting workflows.
Budgeting, Cash Flow, and Business Support
- Oversee annual budgeting for managed properties, development projects, operating entities, property management activities, and affiliated entities.
- Monitor budget-to-actual results and communicate key variances, trends, cash flow considerations, and financial opportunities to leadership.
- Support cash flow planning, property funding needs, distribution analysis, investor note activity, financing requests, and banking relationships.
- Assist leadership with financial analysis, asset management recommendations, and business planning as needed.
Tax, Investor, Lender, and External Reporting Coordination
- Coordinate with the company's external CPA firm to provide annual trial balances, year-end workpapers, supporting schedules, and other information needed for tax return preparation.
- Coordinate investor and vendor 1099 processes, investor K-1 distribution processes, and delivery of tax returns or financial information to lenders and other stakeholders.
- Review completed tax adjustments, lender schedules, guarantee summaries, market value balance sheet support, and similar external reporting materials for completeness and accuracy.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional judgment when handling sensitive financial, investor, lender, and related-party information.
Construction, Development, and Valuation Support
- Oversee accounting support for construction and development projects, including construction loan draws, sworn owner statements, project cost reporting, construction-related entries, and lender documentation.
- Coordinate with construction leadership and accounting staff to ensure project costs, draw activity, property funding, and related accounting entries are accurate and timely.
- Coordinate cost segregation studies and periodic property valuations with outside vendors, including review and reconciliation of final reports to accounting records.
Accounting Operations and Team Development
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, accounting department workflow, and communication with other departments.
- Review recurring payroll allocations, management company allocations, maintenance company allocations, and property-level charges as applicable.
- Lead, coach, and develop accounting team members through staff supervision, workflow management, training, performance feedback, and process improvement.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen accounting systems, reporting efficiency, internal processes, and cross-department communication.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including financial reporting, monthly close, budgeting, cash management, reconciliations, and internal controls.
- Prior supervisory or accounting department leadership experience required.
- Strong understanding of GAAP-based accounting, financial statement preparation, general ledger management, payroll accounting, and year-end reporting processes.
- Ability to manage multiple entities, deadlines, priorities, and stakeholders in a complex business environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-accounting stakeholders.
- High degree of confidentiality, accuracy, organization, and professional judgment.
- CPA, CMA, MBA, or advanced accounting or finance credentials.
Preferred
- Experience in real estate development, property management, construction accounting, investor reporting, family office, private investment, or multi-entity accounting strongly preferred.
- Experience coordinating with external CPA firms, lenders, investors, valuation firms, cost segregation providers, payroll providers, and other third-party advisors preferred.
- Experience with accounting software, payroll platforms, financial reporting tools, and advanced Microsoft Excel preferred.
- Public accounting experience or prior experience serving real estate, construction, investment, or closely held business clients is helpful.
What Success Looks Like
The successful candidate will bring structure, accuracy, leadership, and practical business judgment to a complex accounting and finance environment. This person should be comfortable balancing hands-on review with leadership responsibilities, process improvement, external reporting, and communication with executives, accounting staff, property management, construction leadership, investors, lenders, and outside advisors. Managers also will be considered for ownership opportunities in different properties after 3 successful years of employment. All team members are eligible to be considered for year end performance bonuses.
