Full Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

This is a full-time position working in the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Program. The IPV Attorney consults, advises, and represents intimate partner abuse survivors and their dependent children during their protective order, divorce, and custody proceedings. The IPV Attorney provides educational information to the community, legal system, school system and law enforcement agencies regarding IPV dynamics and services offered by The Nest-Center for Women, Children, and Families. The IPV Attorney works closely with other Nest Legal Services staff to provide a seamless continuum of care and holistic legal services for clients throughout our 17-county region. The IPV Attorney will partner with existing Nest attorney to provide case coverage, including court appearances, hearings, motions, and client meetings as needed.

The IPV Attorney works with families to eliminate the presence or possibility of violence, abuse, or neglect occurring in the home. The IPV Attorney will have skills to address clients who have experienced chronic trauma including but not limited to survivors of child abuse and sexual abuse. The IPV Attorney should have experience working with underserved populations. The IPV Attorney will treat every person seeking services with dignity and respect. The IPV Attorney will set clear boundaries and maintain neutrality in the face of learning more about the complicated adverse experiences of the families we serve. The IPV Attorney will be flexible in the administration of services by being able to connect with clients by phone, text, and video conferencing when in person services are not possible.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide legal counsel and representation to IPV survivors in the protective order process;

2. Provide legal counsel and representation to IPV survivors in the divorce and custody process;

3. Provide limited legal advice and counsel to survivors on their protective order, divorce, and custody cases when unable to offer full representation;

4. Provide case coverage as needed to support existing attorney;

5. Provide information about legal alternatives, court systems, and support for IPV survivors;

6. Advocate for survivors with court personnel, law enforcement, and attorneys, as necessary in securing protective orders;

7. Communicate with community partners such as the Cabinet for Health and Family Services as it relates to survivors’ cases;

8. Inform supervisor weekly regarding caseload and progress to ensure maximum service coverage for clients;

9. Provide educational training and information on spousal/partner abuse throughout the service area;

10. Establish and maintain a professional relationship with community agencies to mitigate overlap of services between agencies and ensure a strong network through which we can refer clients for assistance;

11. Attend and participate in all staff and agency-related meetings as indicated Executive Director;

12. Attend applicable trainings to further enhance the skilled services offered at The Nest;

13. Other duties as necessary and assigned.

ADDITIONAL JOB EXPECTATIONS:

The IPV Attorney will participate in community and Nest events. The IPV Attorney’s schedule will be determined by the Executive Director. The IPV Attorney will be expected to arrive to and leave work at designated times. The Nest requires all staff to be present for three events each year: Family Fun Day, Annual Staff Training, and Reindeer Express. Most projects will be conducted during business hours, but some events will take place after hours and on the weekends. Each staff is required to attend three additional events outside of a regular schedule that will be determined by the Director of the Program or Executive Director.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree from an accredited law school and license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Experience with protective order, divorce, and custody cases. Experience working with individuals and families in crisis relating to intimate partner violence preferred. High levels of knowledge of victimization issues and dynamics of intimate partner violence as well as professionally accepted trauma-informed techniques. This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work well in a team setting, excellent organization, and flexibility. This is a position that requires an understanding of the impact of trauma on families and staff administering services. An ideal candidate will conduct themselves professionally and lead from a trauma-informed lens.
