Isthmus Montessori Academy is a pioneering educational institution located in Madison, Wisconsin, dedicated to providing high-quality Montessori and International Baccalaureate programs for children from infancy through adolescence. Founded in 2012, IMA is a dual-mission organization: both a and a private nonprofit (6 weeks- 3 years old) as well as a tuition-free public charter school (4k-12th grade) . About the Role
We are seeking a Full-Time Primary Classroom Assistant to join our team. This is a wonderful opportunity to support children during a foundational stage of their development and to be an integral part of a vibrant Montessori community.

Primary Classroom Assistants are essential members of the classroom team. In this role, you will:

Support children ages 3–5 in their daily routines, including transitions, work cycles, meals, toileting, and rest times.
Foster a calm, respectful, and nurturing environment that honors each child’s independence and individuality.
Prepare and maintain the classroom environment, including setting up materials, supporting classroom order, and assisting with cleaning and organization.
Work in close partnership with the Lead Guide and classroom team to support the Montessori curriculum and community norms.
Observe and respond to children’s needs with warmth, grace, and consistency.
Support outdoor time and supervision.
Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and ongoing communication with colleagues to ensure the success of the classroom community.

This role is ideal for someone who loves working with young children, values consistency and collaboration, and is eager to learn more about Montessori philosophy and practice.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or related field preferred.
Must be able to pass a background check and provide transcripts/diploma.
Must be on the Wisconsin Registry or willing to join and complete required non-credit early childhood courses if no early childhood courses have been completed.
Willingness to complete all required trainings (CPR/AED, Mandated Reporter, etc.).
Physical ability to work at child-level (on the floor, outdoors, up/down stairs) and lift classroom materials/furniture as needed.
Commitment to Montessori philosophy and IMA’s mission of equity, inclusion, and lifelong learning.

Daily Responsibilities

Support Lead Guides with classroom routines, transitions, and environment preparation.
Provide care for young children, including toileting support, nap assistance, and self-care routines.
Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly classroom (sweeping, laundry, sanitizing, organizing materials, etc.).
Greet each day and each child with respect, kindness, and presence.
Foster student independence in alignment with Montessori principles.
Communicate clearly and respectfully with children, staff, and families.
Assist in aftercare programming with mixed ages as needed.
Support peaceful, purposeful interactions and contribute to a strong sense of community.
Participate in regular check-ins with Lead Guides and Program Directors.
Ensure compliance with AMI philosophy, Wisconsin licensing regulations, and school-wide expectations.

Schedule & Compensation

Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm
Starting compensation: $18/hr
