The Department of Revenue is seeking a Revenue Agent/Revenue Agent 2 in the Tax Operations Bureau of the IS&E Division. This position is headquartered in Madison at the State Revenue Building 2135 Rimrock Road, Madison.

Position Summary

The Revenue Agent is an entry level professional position responsible for processing sales and use tax, specialty tax or withholding tax returns and payments. This work involves providing customer service via phone, fax and email. This position requires an understanding of appropriate tax law and thorough knowledge of the department's processing systems, including WINPAS, and policy and procedure as related to the filing of sales and use tax, specialty tax, or withholding tax returns and payments. The first 18 months in this position will consist of on-the-job training emphasizing observing, assisting and learning. This work is performed under close progressing to limited supervision.

The Revenue Agent 2 is an objective level professional position responsible for processing complex tax documents, providing answers to customer questions related to tax forms and tax law, and making adjustments or preparing assessments and refunds. These roles provide quality customer assistance and acquire additional information to help customers with tax questions. Positions require a high degree of independence, initiative, technical knowledge and ability to communicate across the organization.

Salary Information

The starting pay rate for this Revenue Agent position is between $25.67 ($53,393 annually), depending on experience and qualifications.

The starting pay rate for this Revenue Agent 2 position is between $28.00 - $32.00 per hour ($58,240 and $66,560 annual), depending on experience and qualifications.

The classification of this position is Revenue Agent or Revenue Agent 2, which is in Pay Schedule 07, Pay Range 04. Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Starting pay for current state employees may vary based on applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan.

Job Details

Background Checks: Due to the nature of this position, final candidates will be subject to criminal background, fingerprint, and tax compliance checks.

I-9 Requirements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of appointment. The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.

Probationary Period: An 18-month probationary period may be required.

Remote Work/Telework available as follows:

After six months of employment – up to two days per week.
After twelve months of employment – up to 60% within a 2-week pay period.
Approval of teleworking is supervisor's discretion based on employee performance and business needs.
When teleworking is allowed, must report to the Madison office building (2135 Rimrock Road) on in-office days.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified Revenue Agent applicants will have all of the following:

Experience providing customer service by phone, in writing and/or in person.
Experience reviewing documents for completeness and/or taking action on information submitted.
Experience with Microsoft office products and/or basic computer skills.

In addition to the above, well-qualified applicants will have the following:

Experience working with tax laws (e.g., income, sales, withholding).
Experience explaining laws, regulations and/or statutes.
Experience testing system or software changes.
Experience processing tax returns, payments, or appeals.

The level offered will be based on qualifications met as determined by the entire selection process. In addition to the qualifications above, candidates considered for the Revenue Agent 2 level will have experience using WINPAS Test Environment (RDT).
