We are looking for a highly motivated, efficient and skilled full-time Controller to join our growing team.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead the accounting and financial reporting functions for a growing construction company.
The Controller will be responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of the company’s financial reporting, with a strong focus on construction accounting, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, job costing, financial statements, Profit & Loss reporting, cash flow management, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
This position will work closely with ownership, project managers, operations, and accounting staff to ensure management has accurate and actionable information regarding project profitability, margins, cash flow, backlog, and overall company performance.
Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Accounting
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare and review monthly Profit & Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, Statements of Cash Flows, and supporting schedules.
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure transactions are accurately recorded and classified.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, and other month-end adjustments.
- Perform and review balance sheet reconciliations, including bank accounts, credit cards, loans, lines of credit, payroll liabilities, accounts receivable, accounts payable, retainage, and fixed assets.
- Analyze monthly financial results, gross margins, overhead, and budget-to-actual variances.
- Provide ownership and management with clear explanations of financial performance, trends, and areas requiring attention.
Construction WIP & Job Cost Accounting
- Create, maintain, and review the monthly WIP schedule for all active construction projects.
- Work directly with project managers to maintain accurate project forecasts and estimated costs to complete.
- Calculate percentage of completion, earned revenue, projected gross profit, and gross margin.
- Calculate and monitor overbillings and underbillings.
- Reconcile WIP reporting to the general ledger and monthly financial statements.
- Review projects for cost overruns, margin deterioration, forecast changes, and declining profitability.
- Maintain accurate job costing for labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, purchase orders, and other direct project costs.
- Review actual and committed costs against project budgets.
- Ensure costs are assigned to the correct project and cost code.
- Monitor project profitability throughout the entire project lifecycle.
- Review completed projects to ensure all revenue and costs are properly recorded and projects are appropriately closed.
Construction Revenue & Billing
- Maintain appropriate construction revenue recognition and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Review contract values, approved change orders, costs incurred, estimated costs to complete, and projected margins.
- Oversee construction billing, including progress billing, AIA billing, time-and-material billing, retainage, and contract billing as applicable.
- Monitor accounts receivable, collections, unbilled revenue, retainage, and aging.
- Coordinate with project managers to address billing and collection issues.
Cash Flow, Budgeting & Forecasting
- Prepare and maintain weekly and monthly cash flow forecasts.
- Monitor current and projected cash requirements.
- Lead the annual budgeting process and maintain rolling forecasts.
- Compare actual performance against budget and forecast.
- Maintain visibility into backlog and expected future revenue and profitability.
- Monitor loans, lines of credit, debt payments, and related financial obligations.
Accounting Operations & Internal Controls
- Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, credit card accounting, and general ledger functions.
- Ensure vendor invoices and employee expenses are properly approved and coded to the appropriate job, cost code, department, or general ledger account.
- Maintain effective accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Establish controls over cash, vendor payments, payroll, journal entries, credit cards, and banking transactions.
- Identify accounting process weaknesses and implement improvements.
- Maintain accurate, organized, and audit-ready financial records.
CPA, Tax, Banking & External Reporting
- Serve as the primary accounting contact for the company’s outside CPA.
- Coordinate annual financial statement reviews, compilations, audits, and tax preparation.
- Assist with 1099 reporting, sales and use tax, payroll tax, insurance audits, and other compliance requirements.
- Prepare financial information for banks, lenders, bonding companies, insurance providers, and other external parties as needed.
- Prepare WIP and supporting financial schedules for sureties and bonding agents.
Leadership & Management Reporting
- Provide oversight and direction to accounting department personnel.
- Establish clear accounting processes, responsibilities, deadlines, and controls.
- Work closely with Project Management and Operations to improve the accuracy of project financial information.
- Develop scalable accounting processes to support company growth.
Prepare a comprehensive monthly management reporting package that includes, as applicable:
- Profit & Loss Statement
- Balance Sheet
- Statement of Cash Flows
- WIP Schedule
- Project Profitability and Job Cost Reports
- Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable Aging
- Cash Flow Forecast
- Backlog Report
- Overbilling and Underbilling Analysis
- Retainage Reporting
- Budget-to-Actual Analysis
- Gross Margin and Overhead Analysis
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience preferred.
- Construction accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar senior accounting experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and accrual-basis accounting.
- Strong experience preparing and analyzing financial statements and Profit & Loss statements.
- Strong knowledge of construction WIP reporting, job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and cost-to-complete forecasting.
- Understanding of overbillings, underbillings, retainage, change orders, committed costs, and construction revenue recognition.
- Strong knowledge of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll accounting, general ledger, and cash management.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets skills.
- Ability to independently manage month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Controller-level experience within the construction industry.
- Experience supporting a construction company in the $10M to $50M annual revenue range.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online (QBO) is strongly preferred.
- Buildertrend experience is a plus.
- Experience reconciling financial and job-cost information between QuickBooks Online, Buildertrend, WIP schedules, and project management records.
- Experience with AIA billing, retainage, change orders, subcontractor accounting, and construction contracts.
- Experience developing and improving accounting policies, processes, and internal controls.
- CPA or CPA candidate is a plus but not required.
What Success Looks Like
The successful Controller will ensure that monthly financial statements and WIP reporting are accurate and completed on time, project costs and profitability are clearly understood, cash flow is proactively managed, and ownership has reliable financial information to make business decisions.
This is a hands-on Controller position. The successful candidate must be comfortable working directly in the accounting details while also providing higher-level financial analysis and leadership. The Controller will be expected to identify discrepancies, understand what is driving project and company financial performance, and proactively communicate financial risks and opportunities to management.
Pay: $120,000.00 per year
