Full Job Description

Construction Bookkeeper / Staff Accountant – Residential Real Estate Developer

We are an established residential real estate development and custom homebuilding company seeking an experienced Construction Bookkeeper / Staff Accountant to manage the day-to-day accounting and financial administration of our business.

This is not an entry-level bookkeeping position. We are looking for someone with strong accounting fundamentals who understands how transactions flow through the financial statements, can maintain accurate books with minimal supervision, and is capable of identifying and correcting accounting issues—not simply entering transactions.

Experience with residential construction, real estate development, homebuilding, or construction accounting is strongly preferred.

Primary Responsibilities

Manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
Enter, code and review vendor bills and invoices
Maintain accurate job costing by house/project
Properly allocate expenses to individual projects, lots and overhead accounts
Prepare and submit construction loan/bank draw packages
Track construction loan balances, advances, interest and project funding
Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards and construction loan accounts
Process and administer payroll
Manage employee benefits administration
Maintain employee payroll records, deductions and related reporting
Assist with monthly and year-end accounting close
Review the General Ledger and identify miscoded or questionable transactions
Maintain project budgets and prepare budget-versus-actual reports
Track project costs from lot acquisition through completion and sale
Reconcile home-sale closing statements and project proceeds
Track deposits, earnest money and other project-related transactions
Manage accounting across multiple companies/entities and properly record intercompany transactions
Maintain vendor records, W-9s and assist with 1099 preparation
Maintain organized electronic accounting and financial records
Coordinate with our outside CPA on tax preparation, year-end adjustments and financial reporting
Assist ownership with cash-flow, project-cost and other management reports as needed

Qualifications

5+ years of meaningful bookkeeping/accounting experience preferred
Strong understanding of basic accounting principles, including:
General Ledger accounting
Debits and credits
Accruals and prepaid expenses
Balance-sheet reconciliations
Income Statement and Balance Sheet accounts
Month-end closing procedures
Experience with construction accounting, real estate development or homebuilding is highly desirable
Strong QuickBooks experience required
Experience with Intuit Enterprise Suite (IES) is a major plus
Experience preparing construction loan draws is highly desirable
Strong Excel skills
Extremely organized and detail-oriented
Comfortable managing multiple companies and multiple active construction projects simultaneously
Able to investigate discrepancies and solve accounting problems independently
Able to communicate effectively with banks, vendors, subcontractors, employees, CPAs and management

The Person We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who takes ownership of the accounting function.

The right candidate should be able to look at a set of books and recognize when something doesn't make sense, investigate it, and fix it. We want someone who understands accounting—not simply someone who knows how to operate QuickBooks.

Construction and development accounting can involve dozens of active projects, multiple entities, construction loans, intercompany transactions and thousands of individual project costs. Accuracy and organization are extremely important.

This position has the potential to become a significant long-term role within a growing residential development company.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
