Position
The purpose of a performance evaluation for any class of employee is to document strengths and weaknesses and to identify areas for improved performance. For professional employees, evaluation is primarily a way to obtain written documentation of growth in the profession. Although professional growth is the primary goal, evaluation may also be used to document areas that present problems or deficiencies.
The School District of Manatee County is committed to the concept of self-evaluation and self-reflection as a way to encourage professional growth and development. Self-evaluation, in combination with a fair and objective observation, feedback of a superior, and involvement in professional development activities is the best way to assist professional interpreters in advancing in their profession.
Evaluation Procedure
Interpreter observations are to take place twice each school year. The observations should last a minimum of thirty minutes to observe the interpreter’s skills in a variety of settings. A combination of two observations of fifteen minutes each maybe necessary to observe more than one setting.
The first observation will be conducted by an appointed source that does have knowledge of American Sign Language and who can offer constructive feedback.
The second observation of the interpreter will be conducted by the school Principal or designee. The purpose of this observation is to witness interactions with students and staff members.
The Principal/designee and appointed source will meet within ten days after the second observation. A school administrator will then hold a post conference with the sign language interpreter to review the observation results.
