Job description

Work as a Medical Assistant (MA) to assist providers in the administration of patient care at Southern NH Internal Medicine Associates (SNHIMA). The MA assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments and dressing changes, and performs general administrative duties in accordance with CLIA, NCQA as well as following established practice standards.

The MA assists physicians, clinicians and staff in coordinating and delivering patient care within their scope of practice. The MA may function as a liaison between patients, staff and physicians.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible to follow all Practice Policies and Procedures

Under the Direction of the Physician:

Performs vital chart preparation activities based on the daily scheduled appointments. Ensures all diagnostic test results, emergency/urgent care reports, discharge summaries and consult/PCP reports are located in the medical record and accessible to the provider. Anticipates care information to support provider visit.

Maintains exam rooms with necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares list of medical supplies as needed. Prepares equipment and aids clinician during treatment, examination and testing of patients when necessary.

Greets patients/caregivers following services excellence standards. Performs rooming activities for provider visits according to established criteria including chief complaint, allergies, vital signs, medication list review, tobacco history, LMP and documentation in a timely manner. Prepares patients for physical examination

Obtains and documents age and/or condition specific measurements accurately including vital signs, height, weight, head circumference, peak flow and pulse oximetry based on visit purpose and clinical condition.

Conducts and accurately documents hearing, vision, respiratory and ECG testing.

Performs and accurately documents specific screening based on condition/need including asthma and depression.

Instructs patients in collection of samples. Obtains, documents and processes specimens using the appropriate collection process and equipment.

Performs and documents point of care testing accurately. Acts as a resource for safety, point of care testing and/or immunizations.

Perform venipuncture procedure as needed and processes specimens as outlined in established standards.

Assist providers with patient examination and procedures.

Orders and signs clinical orders in the EMR per provider direction during a provider visit.

Processes procedural instruments according to practice policy and procedures

Administers prescribed medications and immunizations (oral, nasal, injectable and topical) and treatments in accordance with clinician orders and practice standards

Observes, records and reports patient’s condition and reaction to medications, immunizations and treatments to clinicians.

Processes medication prescription refills per practice guidelines using telephonic, electronic or print methods.

Handles prior authorization processes for medications and/or procedures. Documents appropriately.

Orders supplies as designated. Manages clinical supply, exam rooms and medication sample areas to ensure that stock is current, stored appropriately, labeled and par levels maintained.

In collaboration with clinical staff, evaluates patient condition to ensure appointments are given to patients based on severity of illness.

Uses good oral and written communication skills to: respond to incoming patient/caregiver calls, document care given, delegate assignments, relay information, make referrals, and act as liaison between patient, physicians, other disciplines, and/or community agencies.

Reinforces patient/family education re: diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness. Identifies opportunities for education.

May act as preceptor with new clinical staff

Identifies emergent situations and communicates to appropriate personnel for interventions. Functions in emergent situations within scope of practice.

Participates and supports quality and regulatory activities.

Participates in clinical development, councils or ad hoc projects.

Cross trains as a patient service representative as needed

Maintains patient confidentiality at all times

Able to work independently.

Clinical competencies as required
