***THIS IS ON OVER-NIGHT POSITION***

Overview

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) supports the clinical research team in the safe, efficient, and compassionate care of study participants during Phase 1 clinical research studies. The PCT works closely with the Principal Investigator, Sub-Investigators, nurses, study coordinators, and other clinical staff to ensure participant safety and adherence to study protocols.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for assisting with participant care, obtaining and documenting vital signs and other study-related measurements, maintaining accurate documentation, and assisting with the overnight needs of participants throughout their study participation.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, comfortable working in research environment, and able to follow detailed protocols and instructions consistently.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide direct support and basic patient care to study participants throughout Phase 1 clinical research inpatient study stays.
Assist participants with activities of daily living, including ambulation, transfers, positioning, and escorting participants to and from the restroom as needed while maintaining privacy, dignity, and safety.
Obtain and accurately document vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, and oxygen saturation, according to protocol requirements.
Perform and document weight, height, orthostatic vital signs, and other basic clinical measurements as delegated and trained.
Assist nursing and clinical staff with participant assessments, examinations, and study procedures within the scope of training and delegation.
Collect and document urine specimens and assist participants with specimen collection procedures as directed by the protocol.
Monitor participants for changes in condition, complaints, adverse events, or other concerns and promptly communicate findings to the appropriate clinical staff.
Maintain close observation of participants during study procedures and inpatient stays as assigned.
Follow study-specific protocols, clinical research SOPs, safety procedures, and site policies at all times.
Ensure study-related measurements and observations are completed within required protocol time windows.
Accurately document all participant care, vital signs, observations, and delegated activities in source documentation and/or designated study systems.
Assist with participant meal distribution, hydration, comfort needs, and other study-related activities as directed.
Prepare examination and participant areas for study visits and procedures.
Maintain clean, organized, and appropriately stocked clinical areas and supplies.
Assist with collection, organization, and restocking of clinical supplies and study materials.
Follow infection prevention, bloodborne pathogen, and universal precaution procedures.
Maintain participant confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and applicable clinical research regulations.
Communicate effectively with study coordinators, nurses, investigators, and other members of the research team regarding participant status and study activities.
Immediately report abnormal vital signs, participant complaints, falls, injuries, medication concerns, or other potential safety issues to the appropriate clinical staff.
Assist with emergency response procedures as directed by the clinical team.
Participate in study-specific training and maintain required competency documentation.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of clinical research operations.

Phase 1 Clinical Research Responsibilities

Support intensive study visits involving frequent assessments, vital signs, urine collections, ECGs, and other protocol-required procedures as delegated and trained.
Maintain awareness of protocol-specific collection times and assist the clinical team in meeting required study time points.
Assist with participant flow and coordination during periods of high study activity.
Remain attentive to participant safety during overnight and extended study periods when applicable.
Support accurate and timely documentation of all participant-related activities.
Maintain a high level of attention to detail when working with multiple participants and time-sensitive study procedures.
Promptly communicate deviations from expected participant condition, study procedures, or scheduled activities to the appropriate research staff.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Technician (PCT), Medical Assistant (MA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or equivalent clinical experience preferred.
Previous experience in a clinical, hospital, outpatient, or research setting preferred.
BLS certification required or obtained within the required timeframe.
Previous clinical research or Phase 1 research experience is a plus.

Skills and Competencies

Ability to accurately perform and document vital signs and other clinical measurements.
Ability to recognize and promptly report abnormal findings or changes in participant condition.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to maintain participant confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary clinical research team.
Ability to remain calm and organized in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, nights, weekends, and extended shifts when required by study protocols.
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and assist participants with mobility as needed.
Ability to maintain accurate documentation and meet protocol-required timelines.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Ability to assist participants with ambulation, transfers, and restroom needs.
Ability to lift and carry clinical supplies and equipment as required.
Ability to respond quickly to participant needs and clinical emergencies.
Ability to work extended or overnight shifts during inpatient Phase 1 studies.

Work Environment

This position is performed in a clinical research environment and may involve extended participant stays, overnight monitoring, frequent clinical assessments, and time-sensitive protocol procedures. The PCT is expected to maintain a professional, patient-centered approach while consistently following study protocols, site SOPs, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Pay: $22.00 - $26.00 per hour
