Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Fabricator to join a local fabrication team in Marietta, OH. In this pivotal role, you will lead the fabrication of structural steel I-beam skids and modular infrastructure for a high growth industry. You will also be responsible for building large-scale, precision-engineered structural bases designed to support heavy electrical equipment, generators, and various systems.
The ideal candidate is a master fabricator with expert-level proficiency in GMAW (MIG) and FCAW-G (Dual shield) welding, heavy structural fit-up, advanced blueprint reading, and quality assurance under AWS D1.1 standards.
Duties
- Structural Layout & Fit-Up : Read, interpret, and execute complex structural blueprints, shop drawings, and weld symbols to layout, cut, fit, and tack-weld structural steel.
- MIG and Dual Shield Welding: Perform high quality, code-compliant GMAW and FCAW-G welds in all positions (1G through 4G) on structural steel members.
- Precision Fabrication: Maintain strict tolerances for length, squareness, flatness, and camber required for modular skid alignment and equipment mounting.
- Operation of Heavy Equipment: Operate overhead bridge cranes, rigging equipment, positioners, band saws, and plasma cutters, safely to move and prep heavy structural steel.
- Quality & NDT Preparation: Prepare weld joints (grinding & beveling) and ensure all finished welds meet visual (VT) and non-destructive testing (NDT) criteria (MT/UT) per AWS D1.1 standards.
- Leadership & Mentorship: Guide and mentor junior fabricators and welders on fit-up techniques, weld sequencing to minimize heat distortion, and shop safety protocols.
- Continuous Improvement: Work closely with the Quality Control (QC) team and Production Engineers to resolve fit-up issues, streamline fabrication sequences, and maintain job site safety.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of structural steel fabrication. (heavy industrial, structural skids, modular builds, or shipbuilding preferred)
- Welding Expertise: Proven, expert-level proficiency in MIG and Dual Shield MIG on heavy carbon steel (3/8" to 1"+ plate and structural shapes)
- Blueprint Reading: Strong capability to read structural weld symbols, geometric tolerances, and complex multi-page fabrication drawings.
- Rigging & Overhead Crane: Certified or experienced in operating overhead cranes and performing heavy rigging operations safely.
- Tools & Layout: Proficient with layout tools (framing squares, laser levels, string lines, bevel gages, speed squares) and standard metalworking power tools.
- Prior experience with structural steel fabrication.
- Knowledge of heat-straightening techniques and distortion control on long structural spans.
- Certifications: Ability to pass on AWS D1.1 3G welder qualification test using 0.035" or 0.045" MIG or Dual Shield wire in heavy plate.
- Current AWS D1.1 Certifications.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: Ability to lift up to 50lbs independently and move heavy structural components using cranes/hoists. Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and work in tight or awkward positions for extended periods. Standard shop floor environment with noise exposure, welding fumes, heat, and heavy machinery. Full PPE required such as darkening hood, respirator as required, leather sleeves, and steel toed boots.
