Position Overview

TLC is seeking a passionate and skilled English Language Arts teacher for 5th and 6th grade. The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of both Reading and Writing Workshop pedagogy and structured literacy practices grounded in the Science of Reading. This teacher will serve students across a developmental span that bridges upper elementary and early middle school—building foundational literacy skills for students who need them while challenging confident readers and writers to deepen their craft.

This position is ideal for a teacher who thrives in a small school setting, values collaboration with colleagues, and is energized by the opportunity to know every student deeply.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and deliver daily ELA instruction for 5th and 6th grade using a Reading and Writing Workshop model (mini-lesson, independent work time, conferring, share)
Provide explicit, systematic structured literacy instruction for students with foundational reading gaps, including phonics, fluency, and morphology as needed
Design units of study that develop reading comprehension, literary analysis, and written expression across narrative, informational, and opinion/argument genres
Use formative and summative assessments (including running records, spelling inventories, and writing benchmarks) to differentiate instruction and track growth
Confer individually with readers and writers, maintaining detailed records to inform instruction
Foster a classroom culture of independence, risk-taking, and intellectual curiosity aligned with Responsive Classroom principles
Integrate outdoor and experiential learning opportunities into ELA instruction when meaningful
Collaborate with grade-level teammates, the Academic Director, and specialists to support the academic and social-emotional development of all students
Communicate regularly and warmly with families about student progress and classroom happenings
Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school community events

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, or a related field
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Reading and Writing Workshop
Experience teaching upper elementary or middle school ELA
Ability to differentiate instruction for a wide range of readers and writers
Strong classroom management grounded in positive, relational approaches
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:

Master’s degree in Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field
Training or coursework in structured literacy and the Science of Reading (e.g., Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, LETRS, or equivalent)
Experience in independent, progressive, or experiential school settings
Comfort with outdoor education and willingness to teach beyond four walls
North Carolina teaching license (not required for private school employment but valued)
