POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Processing Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks on egg processing and packaging machinery, as well as supporting facility systems. This hands-on role involves troubleshooting equipment issues, conducting preventative maintenance, and ensuring all work complies with stringent food safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and electrical skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Equipment Maintenance and Repair:
Perform routine and emergency maintenance on various egg processing and packaging equipment, including but not limited to the egg grader, egg washers, inkjet daters, case packing robots, conveyors, ovens, sealers, tape machines, palletizer robots, and pallet wrappers.
Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic issues in a timely and efficient manner to minimize downtime.
Repair or replace defective parts using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
Assist with the installation and commissioning of new equipment.
Preventative Maintenance:
Execute preventative maintenance (PM) tasks according to schedule, including lubrication, cleaning, inspections, calibrations and adjustments of machinery.
Document all PM activities and report any identified issues or potential failures.
Contribute to the optimization of PM schedules and procedures.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and food safety protocols (e.g., Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), HACCP, SQF).
Ensure all maintenance work is performed in a manner that prevents product contamination and maintains a sanitary environment.
Utilize Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and other safety measures when working on equipment.
Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving:
Analyze equipment performance and identify root causes of failures or inefficiencies.
Read and interpret equipment manuals, blueprints, and schematics to aid in troubleshooting and repairs.
Work collaboratively with operators and supervisors to resolve equipment-related issues.
Documentation and Communication:
Accurately document all maintenance work performed, including parts used and time taken in designated logs.
Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments regarding equipment status, repairs, and potential issues.
Provide input for improving maintenance procedures and equipment reliability.
Facility Support:
May assist with general facility maintenance tasks as needed, including basic plumbing, lighting, or HVAC support.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED required.
Technical or vocational training in industrial maintenance, electro-mechanical technology, or a related field is highly preferred.
Certifications in welding, electrical work, or refrigeration are a plus.
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably within the food processing industry.
Proven experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
Experience with preventative maintenance programs is desirable.
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of mechanical systems (e.g., gears, bearings, belts, chains, pumps, valves).
Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting (e.g., motors, sensors, basic control circuits, PLCs - basic understanding is a plus).
Ability to perform basic welding and fabrication tasks is an advantage.
Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of food processing and packaging equipment.
Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools, as well as diagnostic equipment (e.g., multimeters, calipers).
Regulatory Knowledge:
Understanding of GMPs, HACCP, and other food safety regulations.
Knowledge of OSHA safety standards, particularly LOTO procedures.
Understanding of biosecurity protocol to prevent site contamination
Soft Skills:
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Good communication skills (verbal and written).
Detail-oriented and committed to quality workmanship.
Ability to follow instructions and work in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to changing technologies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position operates in an in-line food processing environment with layer hens on site.
Must supply the appropriate tools required for completing the job responsibilities (reference the attached tool sheet)
The role may require working in areas with varying temperatures (hot, cold, humid), noise levels, and exposure to food allergens.
Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds may be required.
May require working evenings, weekends, holidays, or on-call as needed to support a 7 day per week operation.
Must possess the ability to work in an agricultural environment, indoors, outdoors, office, warehouse, processing, and farm production areas each varying in temperature, and other environment specific atmospheres.
Must be willing and able to work past the scheduled leave time to complete the job, if needed.
Must possess the ability to work in an open office setting.
Must maintain professionalism with coworkers.
